I've been buying a lot of their products lately. I know they are Academy's house brand, but who makes their stuff? Their rods and lures are really good.

I use their hollow body frogs. The mettle is an awesome reel for the money while it last.

Never tried their rods.

Their rods and hard body baits with VMC hooks are very good. I have a 7'1" ML/XF spinning rod in the ethos line that is awesome for wacky finesse worms and drop shots. Even makes a good deep jigging rod for slabs.

No clue who makes them though.

I hope someone with some insider knowledge answers your question, but my guess is someone as large as Academy goes to a few rod builders and offers some serious buying power for a deep discount, and then have that rod builder put their label on it. Win-win for both.

And they do the same with every product you can find with their label.

I'd guess some are a great value, and some are not, and probably like every other manufacture out there, quality goes up down with varying management/suppliers.

That's just my guess though.

Their tackle and gear are top notch. Great value for the quality you get.

I'm not some rod industry insider, but even the top manufacturers have their rods built overseas. Quality control is the difference, and academy is big enough to be picky. Their rods and reels are as good as anyone's in the price range, and some models are way better. Like others have said you can't beat the mettle reels for 60 bucks.

I use their reels for saltwater. When they break I replace. Good stuff.

The OB use to hoard H2O products in the day.

Also, after this weekend I can add that their crankbaits catch garfish and choupique with the best of them.

I love the rods. Have caught hundreds of trouts and reds with them. Never tried the reels, which do y’all use for saltwater?

Why don’t you like them?

Good enough. They will last a few years if rinsed. At $50-$60 I treat them as disposable.

Mettle.

For the weight and feel, they seem way over priced. Just not close to the value of the reels.

Not all of their rods are created equal. They generally try to approximate what's selling well at the time and undercut that brand. That's gonna lead to duds and diamonds in the rough. Even store to store the selection varies. Same thing happens with the reels. They have some that are 130 and look like a transformer's nutsack, and fish like one too. You just don't notice cause mettle is the GOAT.

They job it out in China.
They just buy it, put their name on it, and cut the middle man out.

I use their hard baits and their hollow frogs. I've also got some tungsten bullets weights, some mono fishing line, and a few other things of that brand, and I've not had an issue with any of it. I've used a rod of that brand once (I didn't have strong enough test on my rod n reels for the area I fished that day so I used a friends) and had no issue with it.

To me, the H2O Express is basically the BCG of fishing gear. Its decent quality for an extremely affordable price. And if something breaks, fails, rips, etc. you can replace it and not take a hit in the pockets.

Am I going to have an arsenal of their rod n reels? Probably not. Simply because I can get name brand combos for the same price or maybe 5 or 10% more, but I will use their other products without hesitation.

ETA: The Abu Garcia Promax is currently $10 more than the H2O mettle combo. The Lew's American hero combo is the same price as the Mettle combo.

I also use a lot of their Game Winner stuff for hunting.
