Interesting, really sounds like something you shoot well and can get good penetration. The fact that 9mm worked but was fmj is good to know also. Although I would like something bigger lol

I think I would prefer a bit more juice than a 9mm also. However, having shot a 454 Casull and 500 Smith, I know that I am far more accurate with my .357 Sig. I also like having more than 5 chances to hit the sweet spot.

I took my new Glock 20 hog hunting today. 10mm, FMJ. I only used it for finishing head shots and I was surprised at it did not finish off the hogs quickly. Maybe hollow points were needed. Anyway, I love the 10mm and it shoots nice bit if you’re really worried about brown bears, put more faith in bear spray!

They say with bears you need hard cast bullets for penetration. Grizzly are notorious for their thick skulls and ability to shake off small caliber low velocity rounds.

having a 9mm against a Grizzly is about as effective as throwing rocks at them.
at a bear minimum, you need a 10mm or 357 magnum, and even that is pushing it with big grizzly's, especially if you are going to have an encounter with them right before winter when they are at their fattest. Those two are great calibers for black bears.
In the rare instance you are charged by a Grizzly, the odds you even get a shot off is slim. They are a lot faster and quieter than you think. If you have the time to prepare for a charge, bear spray first, and if that pissed them off enough to come after you after that, then a .44 magnum/.454 Casull/.500 will finish off the job with one shot.
the thought process of thinking you're going to get 17 shots off with a 9mm is just silly. you'll be shitting your pants and getting mauled by the 3rd or 4th completely ineffective shot, if you even get one shot off.

FN45 with JHP ammo
12 gauge shotgun with buckshot and/or slugs

If you have a 19x why not just stick with that for the trip. Grab some bells and bear spray to keep them away. As other posters say, buy a 10mm. Not for defense bear though, but because why not buy more? FYI I have never had to defend myself from a bear, but I am heading to glacier national park for a week and will only have bear spray. I feel like if I was better trained a 10mm or larger would be good but bear spray has a better range/width/distance for me. I feel like I would not be fast enough to use anything other than spray.

IF you hit it in the head or spine. Otherwise, and most likely, you're fricked. If a mature grizzly decides it wants your arse its most likely going to get your arse. Luckily for us, they don't wake up trying to find some people to eat.

100%.
If he wants to run through the bear spray and kill you, he will.
The only thing that will stop him is if he you drop him with one shot, and the only way to do that is with those calibers and a well placed shot like you said, although you'll still drop it if you hit something vital in the chest cavity, but with how the bear is going to charge you, you're only real shot is in the skull more than likely, and good luck with that. Takes nerves of steel to make that shot, and/or more than likely luck.
I'm at the point where i don't carry a gun anymore in the woods, just bear spray. If that isnt' going to stop them, then they were determined to kill me anyway and a gun wasn't going to stop them either. But more often than not, encounters with bears have them running away from you, unless you unfortunately come between mama and the cubs.

Make noise and keep moving.
I know a lot of people that routinely backpack in bear country.
I know of more people carrying but they say it's for wolves or cats. Bears aren't a big concern for them.
Bears seem to be a concern if you're a hunter. Those Bears know something was just dropped and are coming to steal it.

Minimum 10mm. Use hard cast flat nose heavy grain ammo.
Rifle will likely be of no use because it will be slung over the shoulder or on a pack.
You should be very proficient with getting off a fast accurate shot.
If he is charging its gonna happen fast and you have a small upside down triangle with the eyes as the top corners and the nose as the bottom point.
Anything above the eyes is more than likely just gonna graze him as bears have a thick skull.

Speaking of grizzlies....
I just took these this past week between Teton NP and Yellowstone NP. I'm going through my photos now. I got a lot of close action.
