I had one of my two Jack Russell terrier’s die unexpectedly on Monday. They were brothers from the same liter and never spent more than an hour or two apart in almost 12 years. The one that died was my buddy, in that he was more active and always wanted to play fetch or rough house with me. The one that’s now left alone has always wanted to be a lap dog, but we’ve kept them outside in a 10’x14’ run with a dog house and shade tarp their entire life. This morning and all afternoon and even now, he’s been whining, howling, and barking. I don’t want to be a complete ahole but how long should I put up with it? Dude just lost his brother so I want to cut him some slack. But I don’t want it to turn into something that becomes normal either.

This guy on the left is the one that died.

The day we were given them.

What are you going to do if he doesn’t quit barking?

We have one of those ultra sonic bird house things that emit sounds they don’t like when they bark. I haven’t used it in years but it made a huge difference when they were younger.

Unacceptable that a living organism can not get over losing a companion that has been attached to them their whole lives in less than a day…

Tomorrow is Thursday…. You have a decision to make.

I’m coming for advice on the situation. I’m not threatening to put a bullet in his head. I’m sad too.

It will take a few days, but the dog will get it over it pretty fast. If he continues to be sad, get him a new companion.

That may help but if it were me I’d pay him more attention, maybe let him hang out inside some
He needs to feel secure
It will take time, try to have some patience with him

Thank you, I appreciate the advice. I do want to be patient and kind, just never dealt with this before I’ve only ever had one dog at a time.

It’s just a fricking dog. Put him in his 10 x 14 prison and tell him to STFU. It’s biblical.

How’d he die ?
Last dog I had was a JR. very active and fun. Got 10 years out of her considering the many times she cheated death. Smart as a whip. That was in 12’. Still miss her

He’s calling for his podnuh when he howls. Let him inside. He’s used to having a buddy next to him all the time, and it’ll help you too.

I'd let the one that is left spend his remaining years with you being a inside lap dog!

We had a brother and sister from birth, German shepherds. The female got cancer and died at 9 years old. The brother grieved badly. He was just sad. I spent a lot of time with him.
Vet said companionship should help, so we went and found 2 pups to bring in with him. He put up with them, but didn't bond with them.

Then, 7 weeks after his sister, he laid down and died in my lap. The doctor never found anything wrong with him.

I would say, spend time with him till he gets used to his brother being gone. Comfort him during this time.

Did the Vet check him for a broken heart?
