The red snapper were eating everything you put in the water. We finally started putting 1-2 pound chunks on very large hooks and you would feel little tugs until a grouper grabbed it.

Thanks, everyone. We basically ruled out non-take species of grouper to know that we were legal, but were at a loss.

We had never targeted grouper before, but will probably try to pull another boatload next weekend.

Also, I think it would have placed 3rd in the rodeo this weekend.

She has school teacher arms. You will look back one day and be happy with your decision.

Hey, look. You get the Just Some Average Swinging Dick on the Internet of the Day Award. Congratulations on being so cool.

ETA - This was our first time really targeting groupers, so I'm not that terribly familiar with the different species. I had only caught Gags up to that point. I know now, though.

Yeah, once I got home and started googling, it became pretty obvious. It definitely has the pronounced dorsal fin. Holy crap that thing has some armor. I was used to gags, which have skin closer to a snake. That warsaw had scales like a redfish, but they were like 8 scales thick.

I can tell you, grouper will be my target at the rigs. You can catch a red snapper limit by accident now.

My cousin slaughtered some monster snapper less than 30 miles out of coco in about 70 feet of water. The snapper are getting ridiculous out there i wish those nimrods at NOAA would set limits/seasons state by state.

I'm 99 percent positive that's a Warsaw. To be 100% certain count look at the spines on the dorsal fin. If the second spine is much longer than the third and there are 10 spines it's a Warsaw.

I agree. The only offshore species I know are from pics on here really.

I somewhat agree with Aggressor. If you fish offshore you need to have a good idea about what you're taking. It's for your own good in case you are checked, and also for the good of the fish to ensure you are not taking a protected species (whether the regs are good or not).

People always seem to flip their shite about being able to ID ducks, age deer, etc but don't pay attention to what fish species they are catching offshore.

It wasn't a chicken-beaked duck level offense IMHO.
