Sucks about the hardhead.....I've never gotten hit by one but I have been in the boat before when a friend has and both times I almost passed out just seeing them in pain and watching them almost pass out.

Nice fish!!!

Now, about that flat bill....

Never leave home without it. I keep a few of these in my boat and a few in my tackle box.

I always have Lortabs on me while fishing....especially at night.

Was seriously falling asleep on the way home from night fishing yesterday morning, they keep me awake.

They really hurt that bad??? The fins, right? Not the whiskers? Never been stung by one, but i treat them with kid gloves.

I've been stung by a stingray on my ankle and now a hardhead.
Stingray hurt BAD for a long time.

Hardhead hurt almost as bad for a shorter time frame.

I won't be handling them anymore, that's for sure.

The fins, right?
yes,and evitently it's only the hardhead species.Not bluecats,channelcats,gaftops ETC.

Hardheads actually have barbs on the backsides of the fin spines that rip your flesh.

Not the whiskers?
this is funny.I've heard numerous people wondering if catfish whiskers sting.Wonder where this thought comes from?

I have some little grabber things in my boat for grabbing hardheads. I used to do it the hard way and figured out that it was stupid. My little brother insists on doing it the hard way even with the grabbers in the boat. He hasn't gotten hit yet though. I hate those little bastards so much.

Regular catfish don't hurt nearly as bad nor do they bleed as much. It must have something to do with the type of nasty arse slime on a hardhead.

I've heard this plenty of times as well. No clue where it comes from. I've also heard some people are terrified of gaftop whiskers

i used to carry a plug of apple cure chewing tobacco in my tackle box. Had been told that it was good for a "poultice(spell?). My nephew stepped on a hard head(we called them turd rasslers).I chewed it till it was wet, held it on his foot for 15 minutes and he had no swelling. I have used it since for other stings ,etc.

I thought it was the whiskers when I was young. Just because I'd heard they can "sting" you and just assumed it was the whiskers, I had little experience with cats and noone showed me any different

I have been told the best remedy for pain is to rub the slime of the hardhead on the wound.

I have been finned by bluecats and gaftops before and it does hurt. Not 1/10th as bad as a hardhead, but it is less than pleasant. I wouldn't recommend trying it to find out. And it is always those little bastards that get you!!!

I have heard 2 remedies for hardheads: one is to wipe the slime of the fish on the wound, and the other is to piss on it. Both seem like a bad idea, but I have no idea if either is true or myth...anyone know?

For jellyfish stings it is but i don't think its for hardheads.

For stingrays I have heard the best remedy is water as hot as you can stand on the wound.

+ cagillion

i didn't know this about my stingray sting and suffered for a long time because of it.
My dad stepped on one on Ship Island and the emergency crew there brought him into the EMS unit on the island and made him soak his foot in as hot of water that he could stand.
Evidently it forces most of the venom out of the wound.
He was back in action in about 2 hours.

No way I'm putting that nasty arse shite on anything that's bleeding. I would probably cut my hand off after.

I've used a pinch of copenhagen before and it worked well. I couldn't make myself rub that nasty shite on a bleeding hole in my hand though.

I feel your pain. Stepped on one while fishing on a bridge at my camp. I actually fell over and was blacking out from the pain. Turned white and felt sick for hours. My dad made me soak my foot in bleach for about 6 hours. Worked like a champ.
