Good spinning reel for bass and reds.

Fixed a spinning rod, looking for a middle of the road spinning reel for bass and reds. I'm a baitcaster baw. Have some ultra light spinners for bream and white perch but nothing that will handle something bigger. 14 to 17 lb. test type. What's some you anglers have had good luck with. TIA

Daiwa, just pick a price point.

I have a Daiwa exceler as a backup reel. Didn't want to buy another stradic. It's been pretty good so far. It gets alot of use when I take people fishing with me. I would also look at the Lew's Mach 2

I'm pleasantly surprised with the Shimano Nasci. There's no anti-reverse feature (actually, it's CONSTANT anti-reverse, so not necessary), but I like it. Bought one last fall, then got the wife one for Christmas.

I guess Penn is the top of the line from what I'm perusing online at Academy.

I have some shimano reels probably over 20 years old. Fished the flats in Tampa for reds and snook. I still use them.
A couple friends of mine went with daiwa tournament ss. They still have theirs as well.

i love the diawa sweepfire 3500
smooth as silk and surprisingly good quality for just a $30 reel.
i use it with 15 lbs test for specks and randomly catch 24"-30" reds with it all the time

No comments on the reel itself, but do yourself a favor and spool with nanofil or gliss for the line. So much smoother coming off the reel and much better casting distance. At a minimum use power pro superslick or suffix 832 braid, but I think nanofil and gliss are the bees knees when it comes to spinning reel performance.

What is nanofil and gliss?

Good mid level reel is a Shimano Stradic.
That said, I’ve caught a ton of 35+ inch redfish on a 2500 Shimano Sedona. Any decent spinning reel will drag them in, the price is a better indicator of life span/ toughness of the reel imo. That $75 dollar reel will last 25 years fishing the lake, but salt is a totally different animal.

Mitchell is still hard to beat

They are a best buy for fresh water. The last two I had that saw the gulf ended up rusting in places that don't happen with Penn/Shimano/Daiwa.

Penn Battle II or Shimano Stradic. I have a Shimano Symetre but I think they discontinued those. You can usually catch a good deal on a Pflueger President combo at Cabelas. Thats my back up fresh water setup.

Thanks for all the good info. Looking for something that will hold up to fishing big lake and the bend. It would be a back up for sure.

I particularly like the Hardbodyz line.
