Yea but how much does it all weigh? Unless you each have an ultra light (sub 2 lbs) one person tent I would just being one tent. Assuming you have at least a two person tent.
Goal Zero makes some nice solar chargers that aren't too expensive. Bio lite makes some stoves you can charge a phone off of.

I saw some one person tents at Academy that we're only 2 1/2 lbs each and got two.

What do y'all use to charge your phones?
I bring an external battery pack I got off amazon for about $30. Gives me two charges and weighs 6oz. But I only bring it on trips when I'll be taking plenty of pictures with my phone. Otherwise I turn it off and don't charge it.

We're those the ones for $30 or so?
I've read some decent reviews of them. Just not sure of the durability.

I carry a Bushnell solar wrap charger. I can precharge the battery bar. For longer trips I also carry a battery bar that weighs nothing but gives me 2 charges.

Are they waterproof? Kind of a big deal imo.

Don't forget rain covers for your packs. Sucks not to have dry clothes to change into once in your tent.

From a review I just read.

Also with no vestibule if it's raining you'll have to put your pack inside.
Read the tent is water resistant, not water proof.
Good price you got but remember you get what you pay for.

biggest problem with the tent is the lack of ventilation. I think the tent does tend to retain warmth fairly well, but with so little mesh, it also retains moisture – as warm breath is expelled from the lungs, it rises, and condenses on the inside roof of the tent. Even with maximum ventilation, condensation is a problem. I woke up to a wet tent, in the form of inside condensation, to varying degrees, each time I used it. Not a big deal for a one-nighter, but on a longer trip, time would have to be set aside each day to turn the tent inside out and dry it, assuming schedule and conditions allowed for that.

I would suggest you take your son to an outdoor outfitter and let him try on a few different packs.
This, and make sure you have a salesman that knows how to custom fit a pack. The internal main stay can be bent to conform to the shape of your spine. It makes all the difference in the world to have a pack that truly fits. I got mine at Pack and Paddle in Lafayette.

Or garbage disposal bag. Threads like this make me excited for the camping season. Come on spring.....

I line the inside of my pack with a heavy duty contractor strength trash bag. Everything inside stays dry no matter how hard it rains, and you don't have to fool around with a rain cover. It also traps air and gives you more buoyancy if you have to swim across a creek.

That's Whay I do. No pack cover needed.
But winter backpacking is my time. I sit out June-August. Unless it's at high altitude.

This winter was my first in the NC mountains. Camping in winter here compared to LA is a whole different animal. I was underprepared and walked out at 3AM colder than I have ever been in my life.

We will be heading that way in June to the NOC. Rafting and hiking. Can't wait.

Do y'all use a regular hiking stick or go with the double ski pole things?

Hiking poles, but I can see the attraction of a walking stick. It's more versatile, and if you have a nice carved one, it's a great conversation starter.

I always used a hiking stick. Then decided to try trekking poles. Bought the cheapest ones I could find. $20 for a set at Academy. Figured if I liked them I would get a better set after these broke. Well three years later they are still going strong. I also use them to prop up my tarp above my hammock. Allows me to see out when I wake up.

Well, my mother already bought my son some hiking poles. But I'm kind of old school and think I might want a nice carved stick.

A stick is also useful for them pesky spider webs in the morning.
