I'd like to get any information on trout fishing around Galveston island. We are acquiring some family property there and I have never fished that area.

any areas i should start?

Galveston bay is huge so trying to figure it out on your own is going to take a lot of days on the water.

There are some decent reefs over in East bay you can drift and do pretty well, but I've had the best luck wading a couple of spots in West bay.

Jetties can produce for trout at the right time as well but you have to know the patterns (which I never bothered to do...)

Had a boat for years, now just pay a guide. I'd recommend you hire a guide to show you around and then go from there. I can get you a name of one we use all the time but there are a lot of good guides down there...

When the conditions are right, the surf can be really good. Sandy green to green to the beach and with waves small enough where you're not getting hammered. That's from the galveston jetties all the way to san luis pass. Do not wade in or around the pass without a life jacket.

I fish west bay a lot. There are tons of places to fish. Are you looking at fishing by boat, shore, walk-in wading? If by boat, I will say this, West Bay, especially on the east side towards the causeway, Tiki Island, Harborwalk, etc., it is extremely dangerous and full of oyster reefs. You think it's all open water, but there are reefs everywhere a few inches to a foot or so under the surface. You can see some of the reefs above the surface also. You can really see everything during the winter when a huge cold front blows through and dumps the bay.

If wading, which is usually the best way to target trout, the bottom varies a lot depending on area. Some of it is good hard sand, some of it is really soft bud that you can sink a bit in, some is a mixture of mud and scattered shell. Beware of stingrays.

Mike Williams is a legendary guide there. He’s probably caught more 30” trout than most have caught 5 pounders in their lifetime. He’s up in age, but I think he still guides.

Oh, you mean we are trying to maintain our fishery? What a dumb concept. Most bass fisherman are catch and release. Novel concept I know. Who knew you need 25 pencil trout for a meal. I grew up on Lake Pontchartrain by the way, so it’s not like I’m a native Texan.

The bridge going to the submarine and destroyer museum always has 2 or 3 boats trout fishing along the eastern shore

I get it. You have big trout over there, but not the numbers so it makes sense to have tighter restrictions over there.

Catching 6 fish(1 red/5 silvers) a person tbh is a waste of fuel, ice and drinks....

Imo 3 reds and 10 trout should be texas limits at least but hey what do I know.

Just curious, how far do you have to run out of Galveston to get to snapper?

I have had a few good days fishing texas. But I never had 100 fish days. Grand isle has given me multiple 100 fish days and im talking 2-4 lb trout. You aint getting that in texas.

OP. You got a boat? Do you like to wade? I fish mostly Trinity and East Bay. Surf is good in the Summer. Just wait for the right conditions. I like the Boliver Pocket on the other side of the ferry to wade. I would probably book a guide just to literally get ur feet wet with the system.

We ended up fishing west bay area more specifically some grassy flats around green lake. Caught 2 keeper trout and 2 reds but it took a while

We ended up pulling up on a Sandbar and were wading in about 2-3 feet of water when we caught the redfish. I really enjoyed that. There are reefs around the entire bay we had to be careful navigating
