as I understand the owner of the boat bears most of the responsibility when something like this happens.

Don't worry, the parents are getting sued regardless of admiralty entanglements.

Most homeowner policies generally exclude watercraft for both liability and property damage. I think if its under 25 hp, the homeowner policy would cover. But over 25 hp is normally excluded and they'd only have liability coverage if they had a separate watercraft insurance policy

Mine has always been a rider/endorsement.

I have defended a few.

not really. like your car, the driver who committed the tort bears the responsibility. The owner only has fault if he negligently entrusted the boat, or if the driver is his minor child.

I've heard that. Fortunately AlxTgr didn't sue me when i ran my go-devil boat into a bridge piling on the way to White Lake, so i never got to test it. It was under 25hp though.

One would think though it would be negligent to entrust it to a 14 year old who had been warned about speeding the prior week.

Trying to catch up. Someone asked about who drove the kids to Wham.
The driver had just made 15 . He could only have had a learners permit, if I'm not mistaken, which means he is supposed to be accompanied by a licensed driver. The other kid was 14.
This means that Dad let his son drive illegally about 30? Miles to negligently operate a boat and almost kill a man.
Not sure about who had what kind of lights but from what I understand
lights weren't the problem . Everyone had running lights. The stupid kid was speeding according to the witness. Poppa gonna PAY and should . As stated the witness had scolded the kid the week before for doing the same thing.

Is there a speed limit at Wham?

Serious question

Don't know of a speed limit but the kid was passing people who were driving a lot slower than he was . It was dark and foggy and he was going fast enough to knock the guy out of the boat and send the boat airborne completely over the boat he hit. Anyone have any idea how fast it takes to accomplish that?

this is reminding me of those times we walked out in Catahoula in tennis shoes. We were lucky we never got run over by an airboat. It was a 10 ring circus over there.

15 year old kid, Dad is labile for whatever he did, no matter who owned the boat. Prolly trying to beat everyone to his spot.

I like to think I wouldn’t be that fricking dumb at 14 if I was in his shoes.

also hope he just was lying to his dad about this and the dad is a good dude that’ll straighten him out.

Well, according to folks that know, Pops allowed him to go hunting the next day.
Hard to believe!

I was just telling my wife that every kid at my son's school has a jacked up truck with duck stickers all over it and an insulated dog crate in the back.

Apparently these kids who grew up watching Duck Dynasty think it's all a game.

Duck Hunting is work and can be dangerous, I remember going up the Boeuf River in 7 degree temps with a way over loaded boat. I dang sure don't need some 14 yr old disrespectful turd adding to the fray so he can get a couple of Instagram photos.

I hunted up there for the first time last year and it was a downright crap show! We had a group of 8 teenagers literally 100 yards from us shooting at everything that passed by and of course in their dads gatortail. There should be a law that if you are under 18 duck hunting on public land you should have someone at least over 21 with you or something. I swear it gets stupider every year I hunt. Thank god they finally left at 745 which is the only good thing about kids these days is that they wont stay and hunt long at all.

I hope he has been on his last hunt for a damn long time.
Asking for prayers for the injured man.
