Out here in Utah.

Was there for a Cub Scout meeting with the boy last night and they had an "ad" on their electronic kiosk. So I picked up a couple.

Still not following, but I'm pretty dense so it's probably just me.

I throw locks away, or give them away, whenever I get one. The issue for my using/not using them is, I'd never be able to find the key during a "needful moment" (2 a.m.) - much less be able to insert the key in that little keyhole in the dark to open the lock.

In my redneck world self-defense handguns should be loaded and stored in a handgun vault (preferably one with a Simplex lock to eliminate concerns about dead batteries).

"Extra handguns" (those for which one has no plans for their use on short notice) should be locked/stored in gun safe.

Insurance is sold very inexpensively by an NSSA/NSCA affiliated agency - can't think of their name right this minute. I think the premium is $1.25 per $100 of declared value, with no deductible. In the event of a loss they pay 95% of MSRP. (There are similar programs out there with similarly low premiums).

Teach them and there will be no need for a lock. Gun locks are for people who shouldn’t own guns in the first place, mine go in the garbage.

I hear you, loud and clear, but I don't know the level of education of his buddies, but also don't want to "advertise" if you know what I mean.

That's why you need a gun vault in your nightstand.

So you teach all of your kids friends gun safety to the proficiency you are comfortable using no locks on your spare guns?

Not an absentee parent, mine were smart enough to know not to touch and tell friends the same or call myself or wife. This really isn't difficult with kids that are raised around guns, it's only a problem for those that are not. Hence, if you don't know about guns or want to know about them you should probably just defer to the popo. I am also not a proponent of having loaded guns all over the house with small children.

^^^ I agree with everything in this post.

Our boy knows what to do (don't touch, call mom and/or dad). I don't know about the others that might visit us.

My generation, and all those before were able escape death growing up, living in and visiting friends houses where loaded firearms were usually on public display, most firearms enthusiast had a "glass" gun case in the living room. Gun safes, gun locks, security boxes are a fairly recent invention.
