According to a thread on BayouShooter, sometime around October last year. Not only is it posted with those signs, but the clearings that you'd use to access it are blocked by a 3ft high berm that was built up to block entrance.

I have seen signs that say NASA in the middle of the woods. Soterra owns a whole lot of property north of the interstate

That's all part of the Stennis Buffer Zone so it's all their property.

In reading the main 20 page thread about it on Bayou Shooter, one could determine that people were abusing the area. Leaving trash and dumping crap all over the place.

Dude trying to buy all the land between Pearlington and Bay St. Louis on the coast. He owns alot, Stennis owns the rest.

He wanted to build a Redneck Riviera there before Katrina. The storm halted alot of that.

Just went back and read every page in that 20 page thread on BS. Seems the pit/range has been closed since July of last year. Someone posted this picture on July 1 2012:

In fully reading the thread, litter is most likely what shut it down. People were bringing old furniture and computer parts and dumping it all there. Several BS members would try to clean it up from time to time but they just couldn't keep at it.

ETA: Also, A Hancock Sheriff's Deputy who once posted in there stating that the pit/range WAS OK TO SHOOT at confirmed why it was closed... The new "Infinity Center" which is a new building at the Visitor's Center at Exit 2 was in line with the direction that people would normally be shooting in the pit. So the county had to shut it down. Here's what the Deputy said:

quote:

Sorry fellas but when they built the Infinity Site I had a feeling the writing was on the wall. The placement of the dirt pit facing the Infinity Site is too big a risk and liability for the county to take. This was the last area in the buffer zone to legally shoot weapons. After six years this was the last site I had to re-tell people that it was now "NOT" ok to shoot. I feel as bad as everyone on here, I can't shoot there anymore regardless of my county ties. I hate the the out of the way buffer zone that I started in is becoming a thing of the past. New construction, buildings, and roadways have become the norm in the zone. The out of the way seclusion of the old zone will be greatly missed. Happy shooting fellas and I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings................

Not surprising at all. Pearlington residents most likely.

That's a complete bullshite excuse. Shoot all the people outside of the Visitors Center you want, but make sure not to hit the people inside the building next to it. ?

I bring my boy out there all of the time, they did a shitty job of cleaning it up that's for sure.

The cop? I'm guessing yes.

He's only got 7 posts total.

It seems there's no free sites to go to in the buffer zone anymore, as of July of last year.

Hence why I'll be applying to be a range officer at Honey Island (will be able to go any day I want when it's closed and bring whoever I want... FOR FREE!)
