Not only losing rice acreage for feed, but the practice of flooding fields to control off veg/weeds has greatly changed. MUCH MUCH MUCH less flooded acreage from Nov-April than years ago. All that prime habitat is GONE.

Really? It seems like there's a lot more fields flooded for crawfish than in the past.

That is true, however look at the rice acreage from pre-Rita, and that will give you an idea of flooded winter acreage. Old school was holding water all winter. I’d wager that was higher than the current crawfish acreage but IDK.

I thought the same thing... Ive noticed more over the past 5 years and if they arent a crawfish pond, they are either soybeans or sugar cane

I mean, if they all held water, then I'm sure it was higher. Thanks to sugar prices, a lot of that old rice ground is sugarcane today.
But I'd be surprised if it was actually higher, because there aren't many rice guys today that aren't crawfishing as well. It's about the only way to make money on that operation anymore, unless you are harvesting a second crop. And fewer and fewer guys are doing that.
There also used to be alot more rice/soybean rotations. Those are almost nonexistent today thanks to soybean and crawfish prices being what they are. Farmers typically don't flood after soybeans, assuming they were crawfishing them.
The BP spill in 2010 also created alot more flooding thanks to the NRCS's MBHI program. They paid a lot of money to farmers to flood those fields, and that program is still in existence today (with a lot less participation now, because of how many people were in it esrly on).

I believe laser leveling fields has changed a lot also. Fields drain so efficient now that you don't have fields that just hold puddles anymore.

Definitely.
But, just like no-till farming, the benefit leveling has on the land far outweighs the "negative" impacts to wildlife. Those Flyway geniuses don't understand that though.
I just wonder: if these guys somehow accomplish their goal of banning the hunting of flooded unharvested crop lands, what are they going to be about then? Are they a "one hit wonder" like Vanilla Ice and The Knack? Or are they going to come up with something else to complain about?
Right now, they just seem like a group bitching about something, and once they get their way, that's it...their done.

goins is arrogant AF
I wonder if he used peer reviewed sources for his research or if he just browsed facebook groups and hunting forums.

He really is. He thinks he's God's gift to Louisiana waterfowlers.
And he probably did use peer reviewed articles...but only the ones that support his argument.

Dude influencing laws in Canada.

There is definitely way more flooded acres for crawfish now than years past, but the problem with that is the rice stubble comes back thicker and farmers have pop guns set out in every field. The birds don’t have many areas to rest like when open water was being held to water level for the next rice crop. A lot of good hunting spots have been lost to the uptick in crawfish acreage. Can’t blame the farmers for trying to make a living, I blame rice prices for the decline of duck numbers in my area lol. Maybe Mr Goins can do something about that too.

Very true. Wasn't thinking about it from that aspect, but you are right. A lot of those fields are just too grown up to be any good for ducks.

The farmers would love him if he could get rice prices up. Maybe he can work on soybean prices while he's at it...lmao! But I don't think the crawfish are going anywhere anytime soon.

He has a "buddy" in the white house that will talk to Trump and he will keep us posted when he calls him back. He is gathering "facts" and doing research as we speak. Once he forwards some letters over to China and the higher ups here in the states we should see an uptick in grain prices.

So maybe that dude IS actually getting some traction. I hope and wished they would ban flooding of all crop fields nation wide as well.

Just cause he says he talked to some guy in Canada. I researched all what he said last night at work and saw nothing mentioned about any changes. I don’t think the lead biologist from Canada is worried about some guy from Deridder crying. If you read Canada’s regulation book, they actually have hunting ads in there. Clearly they know how much money is brought in by it.

You were researching the wrong facts.

Those jackasses went fo far for once. Tried to call out a guy in North Dakota for cutting strips of corn to bait the field, and he came back at them and explained that what he was doing was normal and had nothing to do with ducks.
Pricks. I'm not a DU guy, but I hope they crush these guys. Such a frickin joke and they just make Louisiana look like a bunch of whiners.

I saw that, Goins said something along the lines of "leave him alone now, this isn't for ducks"
Posted on 10/23/18 at 8:25 pm to Cowboyfan89
Its called cutting a sample to check moisture of the corn or any other grain before harvesting. These dudes dont know shite from wild honey.
and you can bet your arse if these jake legs hd a flooded corn patch full,of ducks theyd hunt the hell out of it.
