Thoughts on fishing options in the Telluride/Ouray area. Will be there for 4-5 days and have never really fished out west. Would probably want to do a half day trip.

Thanks

Thoughts? Sounds great. Have fun and enjoy. That water is cold!!

Contact a local outfitter (Google is your friend) and ask for a rec. most are eager to assist.

Fyi, there is a park in Telluride and a stream runs through the park. A Couple of years ago when we were at the park, fish were visible and guides were there with clients fishing.

Lake Molas is heavily stocked, and I caught several species last year.
Plenty of high lakes to hike to and fish.
Further the hike, the better the fishing.

Definitely hike to Silver lake to fish. It’s dreamy up there.

I would second Riggs Flyshop in Ridgeway. Did an incredible 3 day raft trip down the Black Canyon during the Salmon fly hatch a few years back.

Just got back from our trip yesterday. We fished the Umcomphagre at poc co chu puk campground and did pretty well with a few big fish. Fall creek and big bear creek found a bunch of small rainbows near telluride. Then fished the Florida river north of the lemon reservoir and caught a bunch of small rainbows. We are already planning the next trip back.

I also will be headed to Durango later in July and was curious to hire a guide or just rent the equipment and go out on my own. Never fly fished, is there other options like a spincast or open face to use on the lakes/resavoirs for trout, small mouths or whatever else they have in em. And what type of hike are we talking about? Mile or two or more.

I fished West Dolores River years ago. Great scenery and quiet. Drive on Hwy 135 past Rico towards Dolores and take a right on 38. Dolores River runs along Hwy 135 along the way. Both offer ample roadside parking for fishing and there's a couple of campgrounds on the West Dolores. Trout lake will be on your left heading southbound on 135, can't miss it.

Man, that drive from Telluride to Rico is probably one of the most, if not the most beautiful stretch of hwy I've ever been on. I like that side better (more expansive and colorful) than the eastern stretch of the San Juan Skyway towards Silverton, although Silverton is pretty bad arse.

Sorry for rambling on, San Juans in SW Colorado is my favorite part of the country.

Fishing the small creeks we wished we would have brought the tenkara rods. Fishing the animas, umcomphagre, delores and San Miguel a fly rod worked. A couple of us bought the wildwater 5wt off Amazon and worked great.
