First Year Doing An Arkansas Rice Field Duck Lease

Went in with another guy that had great success last year. Didn’t know until after the fact that he switched fields. The field last year was great, but was rotating to soybeans this year, so he swapped for the one beside it that is in rice this year. Turns out, the farmer even told him he’d regret it. Idiot!! Anywho, ducks pile into our field at night to eat but absolutely, positively won’t hardly give it a look during the day. Anything we can do to change this, or are we just S.O.L. this year?

I’ll add, one of the best years I ever had hunting in AR, we had a pit in a soybean field.

As a Hail Mary, my guy is taking 700 decoys out there to see if that makes a difference. I suspect it won’t. I figure the only chance it starts getting ducks during the day is if everything else freezes up and we manage to keep some of ours unfrozen.

I can show you fields that are right next to fields that look exactly like one another and year after year after year field one will have ducks and field two will not yet every single year someone leases field two They give up the lease after a year or two and another group will be right behind them to lease it. And it has and forever will be a garhole no matter what is planted in it.

And that’s exactly what we got this year. Can’t believe he actually admitted that the farmer tried to talk him out of changing fields. That’s double-dumbassery! Meanwhile, the field he had last year (literally right beside ours this year) has had 100’s and 100’s killed.

Yup, you are either on the X or you aren't. And when you aren't there isn't a whole lot you can do to change it. Trust me I've tried twice.

A problem with bean fields can be lack of levees, not so much the food source. The years our field is in beans the blind is an island. Much harder to kill ducks out of versus when it’s in rice and the blind is tied into a levee. This isn’t always the case, especially in SLA where they have bigger, permanent levees. But where you’re at the bean field is probably a wide open slick, with a blind sticking up in the middle of it.

I've hunted some soybean fields in South LA (atleast I'm like 99% they were soybeans, they were mixed in with crawfish ponds near it) and we hunted out of pit blinds. Not a huge fan of pit blinds but we killed some ducks. We didn't have a dog and tracking down birds could get hard. Maybe I'm not thinking of soybeans but I'm pretty sure it was. First time seeing those damn eels.
I like any type of duck hunting but a pit blind isn't my favorite.

We’re brushing professional baw. Still doesn’t take a way from the fact that the bean years are not as good as the rice years due to the fact that blind isn’t in a levee. I don’t expect most SLA people will get what I’m talking about.
