Taking the 9 yr old with me. Nature willing, he's going to shoot his first deer holding, sighting, and shooting himself with a .243 I have for him.

I will have my .270 with me too in case Blitzen walks out, but if it is just a nanny, or a 6, it's all his.

I held the rifle the last couple of years while he pulled the trigger, but it's graduation time!

Looking forward to it.
At what age did your kids line up their own shot and kill?

Why not let him shoot a big deer?

I'm sure Deacon will agree that any age is a good age to bring kids hunting.

If one bigger than the 8 on my office wall walks out, I'm the Daddy, it's mine.

I don't know about the "any age" . . .

Personally, I think a lot of people take their kids hunting too early. I think I was 11 or 12 when I shot my first deer and I remember it. Seems like a lot of people let their kids shoot deer really early and I think those kids might not remember that experience when they get older.

Come on man, let the little man shoot whatever he chooses. No need to spoil his hunt (and potentially his lifetime hunting enthusiasm) by taking him and trumping his chances of getting something HE can brag about the rest of his life. Just what I'm thinking.

You know them sad stories about sons accidentally shooting their fathers during hunts... this is how they no doubt start ...

Good luck to ya'll. I think his system is fine. A 9 year old will be just as happy with a 6 as he would with a nice 8.

I think you should let Jr shoot the deer, but have your gun on the deer as well in case he misses, you could back him up.

When I was growing up, we had a fella take his 2 boys hunting all in the same box stand. They drew straws to see whou would get to shoot the buck if one should walk out. Dad won and sure enough, he shot an 8pt, a small one at that, as his sons watched. Everybody at the camp thought he was a total jackass for doing that to his boys.

Had a buddy do this with his girlfriend. A nice deer came out at 350 yds and he took the rifle a shot it. She was all kind of pissed. She probably wouldn't have hit it, but still.

The guy already had some huge deer on the wall and that one probably barely broke 100".

Thats bad, but doing that to your son is 10x as bad IMO.

If she would have killed that deer, I would have found her and married her.

My 8 year old daughter killed her first deer last week. It was a doe 100lbs. But it was her first. The only sad part is that damn scope jumped up and bit her right above her eye.

One of the guys at our camp takes his two boys with him, 10 and 8. 4 or less is the 8 year old, 4 or more is the 10 year old, and 200 yards + is the Dad.
