Fellow OB’era with U shaped houses, what have you done with your courtyard area?

Working on plans and it seems like a lot of the plans I’m pulling from the Internet for Acadian style homes are U shaped. While I’m not against this, I’m worried that the courtyard area will just be an area of dead grass and mud or just a paved uncovered area. And if covered, the whole patio will be just a dark cave with no breeze.

Baws with this type house, have y’all done anything to this area to make it nicer?

I find it works better with a carport open to the area rather than a garage. Then you can cover it and get some better air flow. My current house has the U shape and personally I’m not a huge fan. I’d much rather a longer patio that runs the length of the house.

My house plus shed together make a U back yard. Unfortunately my back yard is the northwest side of my house. That’s probably the worst recipe for uncomfortable patio use. The predominant southern wind is blocked in the summer, and I’m exposed to the north winds in the winter. But the setting sun is the worst of all. I have an 8 year old live oak as my only backyard protection once the sun gets below the roof line. It adds just a little more shade every year but right now it’s not much.

On a positive note I’ve been having about two dozen hummingbirds draining two feeders for a little over a week now.

Nice.

When we add on this summer we will have a U. Planning on a patio, outdoor kitchen area and maybe a small pool.

That’s nice and also not in our short or long term budget.

the circular element doesn't have to be a fountain. It could be a nice ornamental tree.

Hell if I know. That’s just some random picture I pulled of the interwebs.
This is where I go for sun.
