I’m sitting here thinking how rich I’d have to be to even consider spending anywhere near 350 for a bass rod.
IMO it’s hard to beat the value of an ugly stick.

Different strokes for different folks. Most people splurge on one thing or another. There's probably something you spend money on that would make me shake my head. But that's the beauty of having a choice on how we spend our $$$.
I have undoubtedly spent more money in the past 15 years on fishing tackle than I have on the 2 trucks I've driven in that time frame. Some people would think thats insane. I just think of it as good money management.

Fair enough.
I definitely spend a lot money on various outdoor related things .
I guess my thoughts were kinda based on me buying what I thought was a high end shimano tallus jigging rod last year. Was around 175 or so and it’s as nice of rod as I’ve ever used .
Hope you find what you’re looking for !

Oddly enough, I don't think i would spend $350 on an offshore rod. They get so damn beat up that I'd be scared to bring them.

I don't hate bass that much.
I seem to catch plenty with much cheaper gear.

No doubt you do. Maybe OP just has the cash to apply to this item and wishes to buy a nicer class rod. He did say it was for overall use. Maybe he prefers to buy one expensive rod he can use for a variety of techniques instead of 25 $100 rods for every different use??
Why do you take issue with someone wanting to spend their own money?

Yeah sounds problematic. Maybe ziptie a rod holder on there?

quote:I feel the same on salt inshore. I found a deal on a mixed lot of Calcuttas and Chronarchs. had them cleaned and replaced some gears/bearings. Then found a couple of really good Major Craft( I think these are a best buy and prefer them over my Loomis) rods no one seemed to want. Keeps me from carrying my good fresh stuff to the coast.

Never heard of these. Are there any stores that carry them around N.O. metro?

You can rebuild Calcuttas indefinitely.
What series Chronarch are you buying? The Magnesium ones get eaten up saltwater fishing

It's gold.
That series is one of the better ones for Chronarch. Same time period as the green curados. The super free models are legit.

Heck no. You can bottom fish and troll with a broomstick. I’ll pay decent money for something I’ll throw 100s of times in an afternoon because the weight, balance and sensitivity have a big impact. Something I’m just going to bottom fish with or stick in a rod holder to troll? I’ll take the Bass Pro salt special, ugly stick, whatever.

I was thinking more about jigging rods. I knownthey get pricey. My buddy is stationed down in GTMO with the Navy and has gotten into slow pitch jigging. $400 reels and $250+ rods are the starting point for that sort of stuff.

I've been a tournament fisherman for nearly 20 years and I can safely say I've never spent more than $150 for a rod or a reel. Lots of quality options at that price range and really don't get much more bang for your buck by moving up in price classes.
To each his own though.

So if you've never spent more than $150 how can you be sure you don't get much more bang for your buck... but I digress.
I 100% agree fwiw. I think the current sweet spot for performance vs price is in the $150-200 mark. The Shimano curado and zodias lines are phenomenal for their price.
As I previously said, over that you're paying ever increasing amount for ever diminishing refinements. But I just like shiny things.
Just the same as I can't get my head around someone paying $70k for a loaded out truck when you can get a truck with 95-100% of the same performance for $40k or less.

I agree for the most part except for reels.
Not that a $400 dollar reel catches more fish but I can damn sure tell the difference between a Metanium and a Mach Crush.

Does this apply to the MGL spool shimanos as well? I'm moving back to BR this summer and will be doing more inshore than I've been able to the past 11yrs. Do I need to shelve my 2 curados and bantam mgl during brackish use?

More prevalent in the earlier reels. I'd Google search it. 2coolfishing has a good reel maintenance section on their message board
