I think I'm gonna do the same thing. Glad you linked it.
As far as the step, I use it and love it. The step provides easier access to the bed for me and my little boy and serves as a good footrest when playing the guitar on the tailgate.
The flip-up pole is of no use to me.....until I read where someone uses it to keep the ice chest in one spot. I'll have to try that too.
