quote:I see dozens of these threads here every year (with variations such as gun for wife, mom, etc.). You're getting dozens of conflicting answers (which is always the case), because people mostly post their personal preferences.
Any suggestions from the board?
The best advice you've gotten so far is to get a full sized gun from a manufacturer known for the reliability of their guns. No manufacturer makes guns that are 100% reliable, and none makes guns that have a defect rate of 100%.
BUT, you try to beat the odds by buying a statistically reliable weapon (i.e. good track record, over a number of years), then shoot enough rounds thru it to know that you can depend on the particular one you bought.
No offense intended -- but if you have to reach out to an internet board for advice on what to buy, I'm presuming you probably have very little experience shooting handguns. Which is OK - we were all new to guns at some point. But if you are that new to handguns, you need to find a good instructor to get you started on becoming proficient with whatever you buy. Understand that shooting a handgun requires very different techniques than those used in shooting rifles or shotguns.
Self-training with a handgun is essentially an oxymoron. Get a certified instructor to show you the basics so you start with, and build, good habits. There are dozens of ways to shoot a handgun, but most are very inefficient (slow and/or inaccurate) compared to the "tried and true" methods/techniques that you should learn.
ETA: There is some good advice posted on this thread: LINK

1. Go to gun range
2. Rent a few different pistols
3. Pick the one that YOU like the most

Could also be that the person is pretty well educated and overwhelmed by the good options out there these days. Rifles have been in the Golden years for a while now (they're all light and accurate these days) and handguns have caught up (lots of reliable affordable options)

Renting a gun sucks. Its about $20 plus you have to buy their ammo. You'll be out $40+ to test shoot a single gun.

If you are not going to conceal it, get a full size pistol that holds 15-18 rounds... can not go wrong with a glock 19 or a S&W 9mm.

Could be - but if he's already overwhelmed, this thread isn't likely to reduce his "whelm" level.
