Was on horseback and was with his brother. Not sure if he was on or off horse at time.

Ive hunted elk on horseback and those tight switchbacks, I'm coming off those mother frickers. Horses are great tools but I don't trust em a bit.
I also stopped taking big risk when elk hunting. Got hung up in some dead fall one year and knew I was going to break my leg coming out of it. Took about 4 hrs to go 100 yds.

Very sad. May he rest in peace.

We were riding in on a Nevada hunt in a wilderness area. There were horse bones just off the trail. Later in the hunt, the outfitter told me the horse didn’t want to die anymore than I did. I reminded him of the pile of bones we saw riding in. Incredible tool and every hunter needs to make at least one hunt with a pack string. But horses can sure get you hurt.

A horse will freak out and just run with no sense of where or why. A mule is a better ride and won't run off a cliff with you if you can get em broke.
This is a terrible elk hunting tragedy though. Guy had 3 kids at home. Mountains and the men that have lived them are different. And you better respect them

Lemme just tamp down what someone earlier in the thread said also:

Make it a meat hunt. Cow tags. Fill a freezer and have better success rate while doing it.

Not every elk hunt includes 6-10 miles of hiking. Hell the majority of the elk I have killed over the years are within 3-5 miles of the truck. Be willing to take a cow and eat for a year.
I can vouch for this. I've hunted with canyon in NW Colorado. One place we hunted was two hundred yards from the truck and we had two hundred elk circling around us. Cow tag meat hunting. An elk cow is a large animal.

OTC public land in colorado?

There are elk migration routes that cross major roads or easier access areas. Have to catch them at the right time but it can be done. Especially with a cow elk tag.
The good bulls no better than make those moves in shooting light

Not quite but close. There are BLM spots near Craig and outside Maybell where the elk congregate in 3rd and 4th seasons when snow drives them down.
Dillo was referring to a Ranching for Wildlife unit where up until a few years ago out of state hunters could draw a tag.
Public ground is crowded in some areas so the need for getting away from the crowd is greater. In most cases you can draw a cow tag pretty easily.

OTC tags for non residents will no longer exist going forward.
