Eagle Scout class of ‘89

To follow up with your post about going for eagle at 12, he won't make that (nor does anyone expect him to). His birthday is next month and before the date the project will be finished in Mid May.

The best thing he ever did for his scouting career was take First aid, swimming and pioneering merit badges at his first summer camp two years ago. Those three badges knocked out so many first and second class requirements and put him so far ahead of the curve. During free time at camp that summer, while the other kids were at the trading post or goofing off, he had the ear of one of our scoutmasters checking off rank requirements. That first year at camp he was really home sick and kind of shy around the other kids. I think our adult leaders saw this and worked with him to keep him engaged. We've got some great scoutmasters in our troop.

The other thing that really helped him that summer is my wife had major surgery that year and was in the bed for many weeks. Before her surgery, she signed him up for sports camps every week (bike riding distance from the house). As a result he was able to get the 3 "30 days of physical activity" for tenderfoot, second class and first class that tend to hold a lot of kids up with those ranks.

Ironically, he was the last of his webelo class to make "Scout" and tenderfoot. Then he got a fire lit under his bum. Only one other scout from his cross over is still with the troop (two moved away and two quit)...

I was coming here to tell you to check with Cabelas for that very thing.

Being I was an Eagle Scout I wish I could give him some of my old gear. But I am too far away. I do wish him luck though.

I raised 3 boys and all finished their Eagle. It always amazed me how good people were about donating time, money and materials for all of their Eagle projects. They had companies donate pressure treated lumber, rough cut cedar, tandem load of crusher run gravel, bags of topsoil, nails and screws. Basically everything needed for raised beds, blue bird houses and elevating a walking trail to a observatory building.
I also had local sporting goods store that donated 22 ammo, targets for a shooting sports camporee. Safety supply house donated safety glasses and earplugs also.
There are good people out there!

Just got an e-mail from our local Scheels store. They are going to make a donation. We won't know how much it's for until we pick up the check. It's early out day for his school, so I'm going to make him dress up in his uniform when he gets home and go pick it up. They said he could convert it to a gift card and use it in the store. I'm going to try and convince him that's the right thing to do.

ETA: We picked up the donation and they gave him $250! He was able to buy a dozen rods from them with a little bit left over!

We were thinking rod/reel combos, but that's a good thought. $10 for one or the other $20 for both.

Another update: The bench got sent to the company for powder coating last week. They quoted him $400 and agreed to split the cost with him 50%-50%. He went down and spent $200 of the about $500 of the cash/venmo $$ folks have donated to the project.

The kid is now officially over 100 new/used rods with about a month to go. The DNR asked him if he could do 30.
