Dutch Shepherds who knows what
Narrowed my search for the next pup down to this for now. Have a 10 year old GSP that is slowing down a bit and a 3 year old Shih-poo.
I am looking for a dog that will grow up with my 6 year old daughter as well as one that can be taken to the office daily since my office manager will be there a lot by herself.
Anyone know of any good breeders within a few hours of Prairieville or have experiences living with a DS?

re: Dutch Shepherds who knows what
Don't know about any breeders down there. but I was going to take an older pup off a buddy's had down in southern MO. Another buddy had the sister and had a good disposition. The male I was going to take was close to two years old. He ended up being put down after biting a kid next door. I've raised a couple of GSD and figured I could handle this dog. In hindsight and with young grand kids around now, I'm glad I didn't get the dog.

If you get a DS, get a pup, train daily and socialize the hell out of it.

That is definitely the plan. The wife isn't convinced yet

Do you have any experience with dogs from high-drive, working lines? They're a different animal altogether.

Ok...what are your plans for the dog? Dutchies are not sit around the house, take a hike every now and then type of dogs. Are you planning to train in bitesports (IPO, Mondio, etc?) Agility? Herding? Anything?

A well-bred dutchie will be highly intelligent, highly trainable, but NEED a job. If you don't give it mental and physical stimulation you will regret it. A poorly bred one will be a dangerous neurotic mess.

I'm not saying you don't know high energy dogs, and you know better than I do what you want in a dog. But, I will say 99% of American bred gsd's are lap dogs compared to working line gsd's or malanois. Are you asking about actual Dutch shepherds, or malanois?

re: Dutch Shepherds who knows what
My GSP is still 100% wide open unless she's asleep and she's still dreaming about chasing squirrels.
I was set on an actual Dutch Shepherd, but the wife was not and found a dutch/lab mix that might fit what I'm looking for perfectly.
Best dogs I've ever had were mixes.
