Wait till that check engine light stays on because of an exhaust sensor. Or it starts a re-gen as you and your wife are pulling up to eat and you have to drive at highway speeds for 45 minutes while it does its thing. Or when the screen flashes and says that filter is full and you have to take it in for a forced regen….. if you buy one delete it asap.
Can’t say that I won’t have any sensor issues or a check engine light, any truck can have those. But the regen has started quite a few times when I’m about to shut the truck off. I just shut it off and it resumes once I start driving again. No issues with that at all. I have a Banks gauge that tells me when it will regen and when it is finished the regen. It reads about 50 other parameters as well. This was my first diesel truck so I wanted to see all the things it was doing, that why I got it.

I’m on my second Silverado with the 3.0
For lighter duty towing (< 7,000lbs) there isn’t a better engine out there
Period
Smooth, quiet, economical, enough power to get the job done.
What’s not to like?

Are you sure? I'm not going to have that much highway mileage, as I live close to work. I'm getting 15mpg now with a V8 gas burner. I'll take 20+ but is the cost really that much difference considering it's several thousand more upfront and the diesel/DEF cost difference to gas.
I have heard of people having trouble with short trips. If you rarely take trips more than 10-15 miles you can have trouble with the regen system and the DPF. If you drive only short distances it will start the regen but never finish it and eventually the DPF will plug up and you’ll have to take it to the dealer. I can’t say the frequency that happens but I know it has happened a bunch. When I was researching before I bought the truck most of the information said for short commutes it wasn’t worth getting the 3.0 because of the small amount of mileage increase and the other issues with regents.
In my case I drive 30 miles each way to work and I was getting 16 mpg in my Ram truck. Now I get 28 mpg on the same commute. I was filling up 6 times a month and now I fill up 3 times. I was getting 320 miles per tank and now I get 680 miles per tank. DEF is a negligible cost to me, I pay $16 every 5k miles for that. Oil changes cost me the same price as the Ram. I definitely have seen fuel cost savings over the last year.

Ram 1500 diesel owner here.
DEF costs me less than $50/year.
Almost nothing.
2019 Duramax Diesel here
DEF runs me around $35/year...I actually spend money on diesel to drive to Buc-ees and buy their DEF because it's at the pump and about $3.50/gallon. Cheaper than the box stuff.

I was looking at a LM2 recently and asked my cousin who's a diesel mechanic this same question. They haven't been doing the 1/2 tons for long but they cost about the same as L5Ps (around $6k).
These are Missouri prices

Now that's some good feedback. For my short distance usage, the 3.0 might not be the one for me.

Yes they are available. The kit I got came out of Canada. EPA has shut a lot of deleting down in the US but not all. Quick google search will show you what’s out there.

I have put 200k on a 3.0 ecodiesel. I promise you that you do not want one unless you delete it. Anyone saying otherwise has not owned it long enough and put enough miles to give you an accurate assessment. Check engine lights literally stays on if it’s not deleted. Remote start won’t work when check engine light is on. If you don’t have a good friend who is a mechanic the dealership will absolutely screw on working on these things.

Mine has a warranty for 100k miles. If I keep it past that I’ll definitely delete it. But I’d bet there aren’t too many vehicles out there, no matter what fuel they use, that have 200k miles and no check engine lights.

I'm on my second 3.0 duramax. I had a 2021 sierra i bought in 2020 with the lm2 and i can say i never had one issue and i put 65k hard miles while guiding out of state. def consumption is only bad when towing imo. I always keep a jug for long hauls.
i Currently have a 2023 3.0 LZO in my at4 and i love it even more. It gets better fuel economy and tows better than the older LM2 engine
I tow a 24' bay boat and occasionally a 47 horse tractor. it tows smooth and never had any issues.
On top of the great towing, it gets great fuel mileage. I avg around 25 in town and can get 30 on the highway at decent speeds. it gets around 12-14 towing my boat.
with the factory 100k warranty I wouldn't hesitate to buy one
