There are thousands of BBWD in my neighborhood outside of Houston year round. They are definitely called Mexican Squelers. And those suckers whistle everywhere they go. They often land on my too and hang out for a few. Never heard of them until I moved here.

I'm in shock. It's a Squealer, also know as a Wood Duck. And it has been since I first started hearing old farts talk about duck hunting back when I was 0 years old.

We generally call wood ducks "squealers" or "woodies." In my neck of the woods, when we say "mexican squealers" or "mexican whistlers" or "tree duck" we're talking about either species of whistling duck (black bellied or fulvous), not woodies.

That boggles my mind. People call wood ducks squealers more than they call them wood ducks around here. Hell, Haydel's has a Wood Duck call called The Squealer call. I think we've stumbled upon a new white sacacraperch

This. Maybe it's a North LA/ South LA thing? In Ark, a squealer is a woodie.

Yep, sounds like an I-10 border issue. A Wood Duck is a Squealer and a White Wing Whistler/Fulvous is a tree duck. However, tree ducks don't make it to NE LA much so we really don't know what the frick to call them. Rayville Sonic is the best too.

Woody = squealer, all my life.

It wasn't until the last 5-7 years that I've seen either species of tree duck. I call them whistlers, tree ducks, messicans, or vulva's

I've hunted in areas (west of Ville Platte and north of Ville Platte) where the majority of the people call a wood duck a squealer. Totally different from a Mexican Squealer though.
I've also hunted south of Ville Platte where they kill pouldeau and eat them. Not knocking it, just saying different strokes for different folks.

Fulvous Whistling Duck (also called a Fulvous Tree Duck):

Black Bellied Whistling Duck (also called Mexican Whistling Duck, Mexican Squealer, or Black Bellied Tree Duck):

Both have a squeal or whistling call and both are tree ducks, or have at one time been called tree ducks. However, MOST of the time the term squealer is referring to the BBWD and a "tree duck"is the Fulvous.
