I grew up hunting pastures and hardwood bottoms (farm land). Was always kinda jealous of my dad and how he grew up hunting swamps. For several years now I've been trying to better myself on the type hunting you described. I use a GPS due to WMA not allowing flagging to be used but I try not to rely on it and do it on my own with compass, land marks, and awareness.

I'm going edit the OP

never bring a flashlight in the woods

You'll need it if you shoot something, drop something, boat won't start, etc. You can get by on a clear full moon night if you know what you're doing, but you'll never catch me in the woods without a flashlight. Even a little dinky arse keychain flashlight can save your arse.

Is that pertaining to me?

What kind of compass is a "good" compass?

DO NOT get the little ball ones that clip on your shirt. They like to not point north. They are all but banned at our camp.

I like ones that are enclosed. It wont let you mess up your bearing. If you do, you are SOL and will walk the wrong way thinking everything is cool beans. I have thought many times that I am on some sort of super magnetic field and my compass is screwing up, but it was always right

I, and thousands of other people use the Silva Ranger. I boy scout swear that they are one of the best. Can't beat $40 either. Don't buy the case for it

The ball kind or the flat one?

PSA: Anyone who has one of these

Throw it in a lake as far as you can, shoot it, run over it with your truck, or give it to somebody you don't like and get one like I posted earlier.

I have a silva, but it isn't as fancy as that one.

I only buy silva compasses, but I'm sure other brands are fine as well.

I have this cool little dial thing that you put on whatever day it is and it shows you the stars and shite that you can see that night. Pretty cool, but the north star is the only really useful one. The rest move too fast.

What are all the extra lines and stuff on the silva compass for? Keep in mind I have never used a compass to navigate, only a few times to line myself up with a group walking the swamp and just to figure out the wind direction.

I have I think a $7 coleman compass that I tied a piece of decoy string to to hang around my neck. I was actually looking for the little ball compass but couldn't find one guess I'm glad I didnt

Is this a RV survival guide?

I swear last time I went to the end of the dirt I walked at least 5 miles. Aerial map says just north of 1 mile. I say bullshite!

Walking in the swamp isn't real easy for a big, hungover dude.

I'm with you on Silva compass. The biggest thing is to learn to trust that compass. Do not argue with a good compass.
