About to buy a shock collar for my GSP, and went back to read this thread again.

He's about 11 months old now, and he's very obedient. He'll sit until say 'ok' and he'll come when I command it. He's the perfect dog...in the backyard.

Get that mfer off the leash in a field where birds are flying around (tried it during a dove hunt), and he completely disregards my commands. Basically gave me the finger as he's scampering off 300 yds down the public field messing with other hunters and crawling around in the woods. Promised myself I would never go back out there in the field without a tool to reinforce my commands.

One time we were drinking at a buddy's house. and they put his Lab's shock collar around my triceps when I was sleeping. It definitely worked. I'll get the brand for you

You sure did.

And the more I thought about it (and a friend mentioned this as well), there's no sense in yelling "come here" at the top of your lungs because the dude is 300 yds away and he won't come. If you can't reinforce a command, why even say it all. If you say 'come' and he doesn't come, you're losing the ability to use that command. If you continue to use the command without reinforcement, he'll disregard it altogether right? I mean, he's thinking "he said come, I didn't come, I didn't get punishment for it, so frick it'

He knows what you said, those birds are too much fun and he likes running in the field. Happens to almost everyone, time to invest in a good collar. In less than a week he will be a changed dog. It won't take much correction. Did to teach him to come on a whistle?

No, I should have, but it won't be difficult to add it in. I just need to go buy a whistle.

My training backbone structure is based on Gun Dog...and that's what he used (come command and a whistle).

If the collar has a beep function, do you think this could work just as well?

Yep, I use one of these, a Primo duck Whistle. No pea and it is loud.

I don't like that idea for me. I use the beeper for hunting, sometimes on all the time when the dogs are hunting and sometimes on point only mode when they find a bird. I don't want the dog hearing the beep while on point and thinking that I want them to come back to me...

Wick, for your purposes you are absolutely correct. but if the dog will only be used for duck hunting the beep is a good warning and is the step before a shock. no need to shock if the beep effectively shows you mean business. since i dont upland hunt its not an issue for me so i use it.

To OP it depends on what you want to do. if you do upland, dont use it if you have a separate upland collar that beeps on point.

What if I want to do both?

My favorite is duck hunting...but I got the wrong dog for that. Not that I won't be able to use him for that...it's just pulling away from his natural tendancies to point.

I really enjoy upland hunting, but don't see the opportunity to do it here in LA except for woodcock. I want to do it more, but don't hvae a lot of friends who are willing.

My shock level on Dogtra is ~50% which just makes my fingers twitch. The zapp is the warning...
