If so, what is the state offering per tail, what is your go to gun for hunting them?

I shoot them in my yard and eat them. Fricken delicious meat. I use a CZ455.

Surprised nobody has started a nutria farm yet at $5 tail

Jesus, I’ve never thought of that.

how do you cook them?
I usually do a roast. Season the meat and dust with flour. Brown meat in bacon fat. Take out meat. Cook down vegetables of choice. Add back meat. Fill with stock. Make sure the stock comes up to a boil. Put lid of dutch oven on and put in the oven at 280 for 3.5 hours. Comes out great.

What’s neat could you most closely compare it to other than chicken? Maybe squirrel?

12 gauge
We used to shoot 200-250 nutria in a weekend. But the last couple years the numbers have been noticeably down. So I guess the program is working in our area.

Y’all would hunt on foot, boat, or truck?

I remember when they first came out with the program, you would nutria everywhere. There has been a noticeable reduction in numbers since then. That being said I looked it up awhile back after listening to a MeatEater podcast on a similar plan up north. I want to say the top guy pulled in almost 20k, not bad.

Chattabbits stew looks great. I've wrapped them in bacon and stuffed with boudin and then braised with veggies and broth. I've also deboned and run them through a grinder to make chili. It is great meat.

It's a really pink meat. When its ground up you would think it was ground Turkey.

Better. It's super clean and super clean meat. It's kinda like rabbit but a more beef flavor imo.

Not a bad description, though I always thought of it more like really lean pork. But rabbit is a good comparison. Smokes and grills fairly well, too. But really good in a sauce or gravy.
