BIL's dad lost his life from a fall. He had his harness on but wasn't tied off. Make sure you tie off also.

I'm embarassed to admit that I own a nice Muddy Outdoors harness and I have never worn it in the tree. I've always thought about it, but I never do it. I believe they have now come out with a new tether you can use while climbing itself.

Wear that thing man! Muddy ones are nice, besides you not gonna give a shite how nice it is til ya need it. Plus I'd go up against anyone climbing without a harness vs. me with one. Mine came with a climbing rope and once ya get used to it they won't slow ya any. Plus I always know I'm going home in the same shape I left in

Any of you ever seen this one? Looks to be the best one I've seen, and it's only about $15-$20 above the average prices.

Hunter Safety System
I never wore one until I had kids. I will not go up with out it now. I had a lock-on stand seat break under me once. The lanyard caught me and I was able to regain my balance before I went over.

When I was a teenager I bought a shitty walmart climbing stand and had left it in the woods the previous year. It had a black plastic coating over the metal cable going around the tree. Little did I know that a bug or something had bored a microscopic hole in that plastic and it had rusted out the cable hidden beneath it. I was coming down from the stand waaayy up in a pine and heard a "pop." I woke up hanging upside down by my toes which had luckily somehow stayed up under the strap of the lower part. Fearing for my life that my toe would slip for an hour until a buddy found me was not fun.
I never got in another climber again. I use heavy duty lean to's with guard rails without a safety harness but should probably still get one.

And you were one of the lucky ones man. Always wear your harness

I knew a guy who did not return from a afternoon deer hunt. The wife called some family to go check on him and they found him hanging from his tree stand. He was using a rope instead of a proper safety harness and it somehow got wrapped around his neck. They found his pocket knife laying on the ground under his body with the blade half open. His feet were about a foot off of the ground.
Do your family a favor and wear a safety harness.

I don't deer hunt, but if I did, I'd use a harness. I know a couple of people who were severely injured falling out of a stand. I'm talking months of rehab, and in one case, permanent disability.
