Hate to sound like a preacher, but I almost learned the hard way.....twice.
Rule #1...... BUDDY DIVE!!!!!
I spear fished for almost 20 years and had 2 near death experiences and both times was saved by another diver. Nitrogen Narcosis is a bitch and you'll never know when it's going to hit and how hard it will hit you.
I use to be 10' tall and bullet proof too, just glad I got 2 additional shots at life.
God bless his family!

Sucks to hear, prayers for his family.
Did you know the older guy who died last year free diving? My Mom knew his wife really well and showed me a pretty phenomenal slideshow from some of his dives.

What is this "weight vest" I'm hearing about? I've been diving for 10 years and the only weight systems I'm aware of are weight belts and "Weight-integrated BCD's." I don't understand why you would need more weight to dive down deep...if anything it's the opposite as your lungs contract you get "less buoyant" and the air in your BC contracts as well, so if anything you have to fight against sinking. I know that the tank gets lighter as you take air out of it, and you are certainly taking a lot of air out at 200', but the solution there is to dump air out of your BC. Can anyone clarify on the weight vest?

thoughts for his family, and especially with a child on the way, so sad
drowning in the deep ocean is the most frightening thing I can think of, just the thought of makes me anxious

I have a passion for the ocean, but hearing stuff like this keeps me away from diving a little bit.

I would image he is referring to an integrated weight system built into the BC. This eliminates a need to carry a separate weight belt.

I think he speared a grouper and it drug him into the rig. They were able to find his body entangled in the rig. He had a wife and couple of daughters.

Thanks for that post Natty
BigL, pretty sure he is referring to a weight integrated BC
ETA: I'm sure he's using the gear that Johnny Pinell bought 5 years ago from CL. All the gear we used in our SCUBA class went to auction and he bought it. All the BC's were Zeagle Scouts which have an integrated system

I missed the update post. Appears not good news from the reactions. Couldn't find anything on nola.com.

Just got a text from my old lady who is friends with BT's fiance and apparently they are sending down some submarine with a camera on it to search the bottom. No good news.

Are these guys diving in excess of 140' with air or are they blending? If they are diving with regular air occurances like these are a matter of when not if and can hardly be called accidents.

I only know the updates as my gf gets them but they said it is just a waiting game now. I know that the friends of the fiance are taking it are trying their best to be supportive. The fiance is an awesome girl and from everything i have ever heard about BT so was he
