I agree, I don't think its an actual cooling system component that is the problem. but they may have had to move other components to get to the cooling system. honestly with how suddenly the problem showed up it sounds electrical. I would have said the DPF filter is clogged but it's been removed
This was going to my guess as well. If it was a gas burner, obviously clogged cat.
So idles well, can't make power, no unusual smoke, water pump just replaced, problem showed up immediately after.
Assuming mechanic didn't hamfist something, still seems like something's clogged on the exhaust (unlikely) or not getting enough fuel.
Or have y'all got past this already?

Dumb question, but when you say "straight pipe" what do you mean?
No cats, mufflers only?

I went up there and talked to them this morning, what little I could talk. I had a nice typed up report for him to read with descriptions of the problems, etc.
His Duramax guy was out sick today so he won't know anything til tomorrow.

It is a straight pipe. Nothing in it.

Pretty sure he just has a piece of pipe from the arse end of the turbo to the tip.
I saw it puff black smoke twice yesterday. Seemed like it still had plenty of power when he was putting it on the trailer. It was idling pretty well from what I could tell. There were some pretty strange noises though.

From the way you were describing it I was worried it wouldn't get on the trailer. Looked like it still had plenty of arse to me. Gotta be a sensor or something. Damn sure doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the motor.

Kinda what I'm thinking. It will crank and idle fine. It just shudders when you give it much acceleration.

I should have told them to check this thread if they need any assistance in diagnosing the problem.

You coulda launched it over the front the trailer if you wanted. I was expecting a bunch of sputtering and smoking and rattling and shite.

oh this is still going.
how many times did i get made fun of for asking about the toureg?

These are my thoughts as well.

We forgot about your original OP about page 2 or so.

Must've just missed you man. Tony told me they finally caught up on backlogged stuff so they should be able to get to your truck soon. There wasn't any Chevys in any of the bays. 8 Fords
The one tech working started my truck while I was in there to do some compression test by the starter, and it was smoking so bad you couldn't see anything in the damn shop.

Zero.
Pretty much anybody with any understanding of fuel economy agrees that we need to pursue diesel cars in this country, and less EPA regs on diesels are why the europeans are smoking our arse in this category, along with stupid bleeding heart hippies around here.

I bet there isn't.
If idles well and can get itself up on a trailer, that would rule out trans also, IMHO.
The noises, I don't know. That kind of makes the transmission come back into it.
So really, loss of power at higher RPM.
No leaking fuel, ya'll woulda seen that.
It's sucking air, I think. That would account for the noise. Possibly, TPS (if they call it that).
Since it happened so soon after it was worked on, I'm sure the new mechanic is gonna check the basics.

I wish someone would make a diesel van.

Yep. I gave them the ticket from the water pump repairs so they could see what the other shop did.

Possible, but it seems like that would screw up the idle as well. It still had a really good idle as far as I could tell.
It seemed like it still had 100% low end power. Something is throwing the computer for a loop. Gotta be.
