Dewalt planer Rigid planer
I’m looking to get a planer. Have narrowed my search down to these too. Just curious if anyone has experience with both?

You always want the heavier one.
Some people tout light as good for a planet you want a heavier one.

Been running an old Dewalt 742. Planed out a couple K bf of oak and very happy. One thing about these small planers is " snipe ". That is at the very start of planning a board, you have a small dig in. To fix that, you can build a thin infeed table that fits at the bottom, thru the planner and extend that about 2' on each side or as I do, just have your boards about 4" longer the what you need.

I don’t have experience with these planers, but heavily invest in Dewalt tools as compared to Rigid. Unless there is some particular feature available on the Rigid, I would go Dewalt as their build quality is unmatched in the market they seek to serve.

I researched the reviews on both and the comments, while generally positive for both, indicated more durability problems with the Rigid.

I LOVE my Dewalt 742 planer. I would buy it again in a heartbeat, had mine about three years now works great.

With any planer have a GREAT dust collection system, or run outside only it will throw wood chips 20'.

Seems like dewalt is the way to go here. Not usually a fan of dewalt, more of a makita guy, but I’ll give it a go.
Fishfighter, as far as snipe these have a locking mechanism on the motor that is suppose to do really well against snipe. I’ve read reviews that say it virtually eliminates it. I guess I’ll see how well it does. Both machines have it.

yes, my planner has that, but you still get the snipe. That is why I posted about a extend feed table.

here is a good make up to a table.

I'd save a little extra coin and get the Dewalt 735, its a better unit than the other 2 with much better dust extraction.

Have you looked at the grizzlies? They are nice and heavy. And a little more expensive. I have the 15”. The sucker eats. As someone else said it shoots chips all over even with a vacuum system. I have mine right by one of my shop doors and open up when using it.

If you are gonna use it a lot get a big one

Why do you want a planer?

Are you planning on getting more use out of a larger board?

I have the 735 and love it except when I have to move it.

Pectus, Use a planner to finish rough sawn wood and or remove twist/cups

No only one needs a planer, but one will need a edger/jointer that is a must. That is the only way to really square boards.

Got a power buy off craiglist for a very old HF 6" jointer for $75. Had to clean up the table and new blades cost $12.

Been a DEWALT buyer for years, decided to go cheaper with Rigid one day and bought some of their cordless drills. Much weaker than a DEWALT doesn’t last as long but has lifetime warranty. It isn’t the planner but I’m going to guess it’s weaker than the DEWALT.

So the answer is yes.

And you will need a planer and jointer to do that. Planer needs one straight edge to work. jointer gets you that.

Would like to start doing cutting boards and what not. Glue different types of wood together to make accents at stuff. Need one to get them the same height.
Grizzley looks nice but also $1k lol. If I get more into it I may look into upgrading down the road.
