You are sure bringing back the memories. In our camp, miss was a cut short tail put on the wall with your name and date written on it. If you killed a buck, you bought the case of beer for the elders while youngsters skinned the deer. If you were on the regular skinning crew, it meant you were respected by the elders and trusted with the task. Everyone stayed outside socializing and discussed the hunt and gave their opinions on what to do tomorrow. The Hunt Master always made the call. We shot any buck we saw and and did not need a rulebook to reference before the shot. Needless to say "not mature enough" was not heard.
The opinion that it was trash that hunted this way was far from the truth. Acceptance to the group required family connections, community standing, or respect to be permitted to join in. Those without hunted "reserves" back then(not that it was wrong). I now still hunt private land only, but long for the old days.

My dad owned some land in Kiln, MS and one time my brothers and I were there shooting our 22s and there was a deer drive with dogs with guys in trucks all down the Texas Flat road running everyone’s land. One of those rednecks fired buckshot over our heads. I can still hear the shot hitting the pine trees....... frick dog hunting. This was mid 70’s.

Not even close analogy, this probably 70’s or earlier, my experience they had a high percentage of ignorant losers. Sorry.

The common theme here is rednecks. Let's just ban the rednecks.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is true. The younger folks in this thread will never experience the things we old codgers enjoyed and I really do feel a little bit sorry for them on account of that, too.

100% agree. I've also noticed that as soon as the evening hunt is over everyone is rushing to get home. I finally told a guy the other day to lock his phone in the truck, your wife and kids are not drowning. Spend a second of your week just sitting and talking about things that don't involve business or running the house. God forbid you had to spend the night. I break it down to people don't know how to get away.

For one hour, one day, or one weekend... just don't give a crap about anything but how you gonna eat, where you gonna sit a stand, and should you wait around 5 more minutes to take a crap instead of shedding clothes on the way to the stand.

Hunting is not what it used to be for sure. People are so worried about "trophies" instead of enjoying themselves. I guess they have to justify the amount of money they spend on Under Armor camo, Ozonics scent eliminators, and HECS clothes to block their electrical energy fields.

I have a 14 year old son and we both love to get away for days at a time. He goes to a private school and I asked if he wanted to invite a friend to come hunting 1 weekend and he said he didn't think any of his friends would even stay at our camp. I remember as a kid if someone invited you hunting, you didn't worry about sleeping arrangements, you grabbed a sleeping bag and went. I know this sounds like a "back in my day" story, but it kind of is. We still camp in the same spot my grandfather and uncles cleared out 40-50 years ago with no running water and only a small generator for lights.

I still refuse to use a deer cam, I like the mystery of not knowing what is exactly out there.

I like the camera because it's a window into a world you'd otherwise probably not see. Especially movement at night. I always said most of the fun for me is before pulling the trigger. And cameras allow me anticipation of what may be captured. I know it doesn't show everything, so theres always mystery.
