I’m not a fan of dog hunting. That’s just my opinion. I feel they put too much pressure on the deer and forces them to nocturnal habits far more easily than normal hunting. Im also not a fan of crossbows. Again that’s my opinion, I believe crossbows should be labeled as primitive weapons NOT bows meaning that they should only be used during the primitive season not during the bow season. But that is a topic for another day.

I grew up in North Louisiana and my dad was an avid outdoorsman, he said there were no deer in the area until probably the mid 70's or so.

If they saw a track in the road ditch everyone would gather around to look at it.

I’m 52, so I didn’t experience it 50 years ago. But I’m old enough to know how it was done. Deer were run with dogs and most land wasn’t posted. Scores and spreads were never mentioned. Points made all the difference. An 8 was equal to an 8 pound bass. Ten point was very rare, like a 10 pound bass.

I’ve seen it done.

People who knock that have never tried it really don’t know what they’re talking about. I agree with the other guy that said it makes them skiddish. But it’s still a fun hunt.

I had a chance to do it once years ago and will probably never get to do it again. I guess it’s the idea of hey, I’m not sitting here waiting for you, we’re coming and finna bust yo arse baw.

frick dem.

Why??
It’s a great way to start a kid hunting. When I was a kid I loved riding in the mud and everyone gathering up to eat lunch together. A lot of good times and great camaraderie. I’m still in a hunting club that I joined the year I graduated from high school. I’ve had leases of my own and hunted grass patches from box stands but I still love to go on a dog drive.
As far as too much pressure on deer and making them go nocturnal, I disagree. I think the absolute worse thing to happen to hunting has been the proliferation of grass patches and corn feeders. Those have allowed the deer to be more nocturnal. The deer don’t have to browse for food, they know there’s a grass patch on that hill and there is no need to go there in the daylight.

And running them with dog doesn't?

A deer will eat natural browse before they hit a food plot or corn pile

We had shitty boots!

Our climbers were unreasonably dangerous per se, and only had a bottom. I stuffed a towel under my shirt to keep my chest from getting tore up.

Our long John tops had little squares missing from them.

I agree with this that’s why I hunt natural feeds. My buddy got out of a club because they were running dogs. He would see deer all the time and get several deer before the club members would start running dogs. As soon as they started running dogs he would not see another deer the remainder of the season.
