Went to our place yesterday and literally every tree on 600 acres of 25 yr old pines is down.

Had a picture of a doe the morning the storm hit standing in beautiful pines, and next picture is of a tangled tree top and the same doe 4 days later. Jumped two does while trying to get to camera.

My question is what should I expect moving forward with deer numbers? Any of you guys who went through a big hurricane want to share how it effected the hunting?

will be better in your case

25 year old pines dont have much browse

canopy opened up, sunlight will hit the ground, and the good stuff will appear

deer numbers will increase

I experienced the same thing with Katrina. The first few seasons after sucked but it gave the animals all the cover they could want and then some. Not to mention no one was killing them. After about the fifth or sixth season the woods opened a little and you could hunt it some. There were deer and hogs EVERYWHERE! All you had to do was put yourself down wind from whatever opening you could find and you'd kill something. It stayed that way for a few seasons too. Now its opened up alot more but there still some thickets only the hogs can penetrate and the hunting has leveled off. After all that, it's better than it was before Katrina.

Deer numbers will increase but they’ll be struggling to find shelter for a little bit. After Rita they completely changed where they bedded down and we started jumping deer on the way in almost every hunt. Had to rethink everything

Twenty is mature. We clear cut some last year but just to re plant how we wanted it.

Most of it had been thinned a couple times and we burn every other year

Seems almost like hunting a fresh cutover. You’ll be fine. Just find where they are moving and set it up.

Sounds like there will be plenty of bedding cover.

Only experience I have with this is in Hardwood’s

I’ve heard several people mention that after bad hurricanes they experience a down year in deer numbers. Story is that all the vegetation that is blown out the trees into water then decays in the water and somehow makes the deer sick. That and influx of mosquitos and your deer numbers go down.

No idea if any of that is reality but I’ve heard several people try to come up with a therory on why their numbers are down

I flew some Forest Industries surveyors after Michael. We surveyed over 125,000 acres for assessment and 80-90% of the merchantable timber was destroyed. This was between Panama City all the way to Lake Okeechobee. The premerchanable pine was ok.
