Is this bad enough where I need to fix it?

If so, any suggestions on the best method? I think I've seen some bolt on skeg guards that may work.

I wouldnt worry about it. Howd you manage to ding up that edge? I’ve always seen the other side dinged up from underwater obstructions

Something probably got caught on the prop and pulled/forced through the gap.

Maybe a hard object between the prop and the skeg.

Is prop damaged too?

Millions of crab boats don't have any skeg so i think you're good. You actually have quite a bit more skeg than my 22 motor.

You might want to take a grinder and smooth it out a bit so it is not so jagged. Those jagged things sticking out are good targets to get knocked off with prop debris and will probably take more of the skeg with it than just the part sticking out a bit.. Take it for a spin and you probably won't notice any difference from performance vs pre-damage performance.

The other option is to have it welded. That is a very easy weld to do.for someone that knows aluminum. Really a non-critical area not prone to collision so weld it if you want it to look like "new".

Prop looks good being stainless, but is your propshaft ok?

What kind of boat/speed?

Probably ok, but you can put a skeg guard on to cover/stabilize it.

I have knocked two clean off. I was always able to find someone who welds new ones on.

I busted half of mine off. Older engine so went the cheap route with skeg protector and it has held up really well. Pretty cheap option if one is worried about current state of skeg

I do know that you should not get some joe schmo to weld it. I learned that the hard way. It can melt seals, burn oil.

The general purpose of the skeg is to keep you from hitting something on the bottom of the motor/ prop. As long as its not bent and broken off below the prop, its fine imo.
