Cypress okay for a fence?

I need to replace about 25 feet of fence/gate at the front of my yard (not replacing the entire fence, just the part you can see from the street). I don't like how the cedar grays over time, and was considering cypress. From what I understand, cypress is relatively weather resistant and is used for outside decks. My plan was to get some good looking cypress 1x6 boards (possibly tongue & groove deck boards?), sand them, stain them with a light stain, then either use varnish or some kind of deck sealer. Seems like this would look much better than cedar and would stay looking good for several years.
Is my plan flawed? I don't think I've ever seen a cypress fence personally, but is there any reason this wouldn't work?

Hate to burst your bubble, but all fences will gray over time unless stain/sealed. To me it's not worth the extra $2-3/board to buy Cedar over treated pine, especially if you're gonna stain/seal it afterwards.

Looking online, it appears 1x6 cypress boards are around $10-12, and I need around 60 boards.

Unless you’re using old growth cypress, it will rot. And if you’re building a fence out of old growth cypress you’re LOADED!
Don’t use pine, it warps and looks like hammered dog shite. Get cedar boards from a local lumber yard (not a box store) and it will last a lifetime. Don’t like the graying, stain it.

Rough cut oak catch pen boards. Paint with used motor oil and you won’t worry about them for the rest of your life. Won’t be the prettiest fence but will last

I was at Lowes and Home Depot today and took a look at some wood. They had a few cedar boards that were finished on one side and rough on the other, and the finished side looks really nice (much nicer than “fence board” cedar). As you said, box store, so when I say they had a few boards, they literally had 3-4 boards.
I’ll have to go check out one of the local lumber yards, but I think getting some nice real cedar boards and staining/sealing them will be exactly what I’m looking for.

I meant cedar fence boards at big box stores. Those boards you’re talking about are nice and expensive. I’ve used that for a ceiling in my house. You don’t need that nice for fence.

I knew someone who used rough-cut cypress to make a fence. The boards were something like 1" X 12" and the fence was a long one. The cypress held up nicely, as it never cracked or warped...but it did turn gray about as quickly as pine or cedar does. It lasted a long time, but I am not sure it lasted any longer than cedar.
