Spent the weekend in Pensacola. Ran my buddies boat over to Crab Island - Destin with the wives and kids. Gotta admit, despite my misgivings, it was pretty cool. Sort of like a prop stop on the water but less trashy, less roided, beautiful water, more family friendly and pretty much no jerks. Would go again.

Enterprising entrepreneurs were slling all sorts of stuff out their from dinghys.

Had and inflatable park on the water to keep the kids interested for a while.

Anyone else been?

Everytime I've been to crab Island, I don't remember to boat ride back.

It's a blast. But people drown out there every year because of booze and the current are a bad mix

Love Crab Island!! It's a perfect mix of a lot going on but not too much. You can chill in your own boat or wander around. Last time I went a dude was selling boiled peanuts out of a dinghy.

They sell boiled peanuts, hot dogs, ice cream, (I even think I saw chicken on a stick one time) out of little dinghies

We go every year. Two years ago some dummy tried to swim back to the Destin Marina from the island. He ended up drowning and his body was recovered almost a half mile out of the pass. Its crazy how fast that current is, especially on outgoing tides.

I bought boiled peanuts (cajun and reg), and my kids all got ice cream. The chick selling the ice cream had the best damn body I have seen in quite some time. My god, she was fine as frog hair.

All the dads were going over to her to "purchase ice cream".

Our wives were laughing at us cause we passed up the guy with the ice cream vendor music to go buy from the fine chick.

ETA: Current was rolling. I was surprised by all the people crossing the channel on the paddle boards and such.

Been a few times with my family. Rented a pontoon both times and drove out there. It was fun but I doubt I do it again unless someone else rents it and I don't have to drive. I like zero to no stress on a vacation and we had a bad storm come up the last time I was out there which meant a hasty anchor pull-up, fighting a decent chop back to the marina, and obviously cutting into the drinking as I played Capt.

That is true but unless I was doing it out of a true fishing boat that you are comfortable with, I think I would just stick to doing Crab Island stuff. Like you said that bridge gets a ton of boat traffic by mostly drunken retards and the current is whipping through there. I think I would pass if I was renting a pontoon to try and fish.

I have had good Red action at the jetties where at least you don't have to deal with Crab Island traffic and bridge pilings.

We brought our boat with us last year. I am glad we did it but I don't think I would go through the hassle again. The current was ripping and dragging jellyfish with it. My daughter wouldn't even get in. I ended up just beaching the boat on the sandbar inside the harbor. We also had to wait out thunderstorms to get back to the launch. It was cool watching all the different boats come in and out. I almost had a heart attack when the AJ's pirate ship shot its cannon off as it was pulling out.

A side note for any of yall thinking about bringing your boat, check with the hotel before you get there. Most don't allow boats in the parking lot. I had to pay $25 a day to keep it in the storage area. We were at Sandestin and to keep it in the marina would have been like $5 per foot of length per night.

I will never bring a boat to Destin again from LA. For starters it just sucks having to haul it to and from dealing with that thing behind you the whole way. Then you have to keep it somewhere, take it off and on, and obviously pay for storage. Then all the thrills and joys of boat launching and finally, fishing waters you really don't know all that well since it is not your turf. Way better just to hire a guide or better yet, jump on an offshore charter.

They should make the pontoon renters pass a basic nautical knowledge and helmsman skills test before letting them loose on such a congested body of water.

Something so simple as how to anchor your vessel seems to be very tough for these folks.

Next time go to the big marina at mid town bridge. They will load in boat in for you and have it dockside when u pull up. Also take it out and store it when you return. Fill it up with gas as well if you need it. Expensive but worth it for the no hassle aspect. They will wash it as well

Why not just hire a guide?
