Has the dog developed the swollen lower neck (poison pocket) yet? that is always a good sign that the dogs immune system is kicking it.

Looks like maybe a little bit? Leg is still swollen. Just brought her home from the vet. Walking much better and getting up and down much easier now, too. Got three bottle of different pills to give her. Brought her inside to rest where it's much cooler. Normally, she's an outside dog. Vet said she needed to walk a lot and that would help reduce the swelling. She still feels bad, though, but not nearly as bad as the past few days.

I swear I had seen water moccasins in your area,

Eastern Virginia around the Great Dismal Swamp area DOES have cottonmouths. Here in SW Virginia mountains we have too much cold winter weather and not nearly enough suitable wet habitat for cottonmouths. For that, I'm glad!

If it’s a copper head she will be fine, if it’s a cane break then man she is gunna have some tissue loss if she survives.

Were you not able to identify the snake?

Nope. Never saw it. Vet put her on cephelexin 500 mg, prednisone 20 mg, and cephelexin 20 mg at home. Still a sick pup, though. Not eating normally yet, but acting better each day. Wants to sleep a lot and leg still swollen. Go back to vet Monday for followup.

Based on what you've said said in the thread, and personal experience, I think your pup got popped by a timber rattler. I had one get bitten by a copperhead on the nose when he was about a year old and he was only down for 1 day. (We saw the snake.)

Never even took him in to the Vet. I called the UT vet school on a Sunday (I l lived in Knoxville at the time) from a pay phone way out near the Obed river (pre-cell phone days). They said give him Benadryl and if he got worse bring him in. He slept for about 12-14 hours straight (I'm sure the beneadryl knocked him out) and when he woke up the next morning he was ready to roll. Swollen nose and all...

Could be? It had to have been a smaller one, though, I would think based on the fang marks? She is still swollen, but is getting around a little better. But...she's not the same dog, demeanor, behavior, and activity as she was last Sunday afternoon. I'm betting there are folks in here who have had much more experience with snake bitten dogs than I. This is my first. Vet did say to expect tissue necrosis.

Are there any pet hyperbaric chambers in your area? Seen incredible results with them. Also have seen some reasonable results with electrostim in the bite area. We didn't have that hyperbaric chamber until a few years after my dog's bite, and doing the electrostim on his head, behind his eye was a bit much for me to subject him to in his condition. But, like i said in my first reply, he lived another 11+ years, like it almost didn't happen. Just had shittier vision on one side, and looked kinda like 2 face from batman. His necrosis was reserved for just his left side of his head, and being a pit mix it was a lot of meat that necrosis got.

They say the smaller ones pack a bigger punch.

Growing up I had a mutt that as a natural born snake killer, but he also got popped many times (usually face/head/neck). We never took him to the vet, he'd lay around for a few days and be fine.

I need to take note of these threads I believe your pup is second or third I have heard on OB. I’m happy your pup is pulling through, be careful lol may not be able to get em outa the house now that he is used to the ac and family inside! Ha!

Question.
Was there a specific vet that gave crofab that you had to travel to or was your vet able to order it or had some on hand? I think it’s just a matter of time until my dog gets a bite and I keep meaning to make a plan and have not. I just have my personal aid/go bag with basics for dog and myself. I dropped my dog health insurance in feb march as I changed my cc number and didn’t realize I had not changed payment info so I had not made a payment on it for a few months pisses me off, but now in order to get it back it’s liked doubled, had it locked in for last 6years and damn I’m pissed.

Love to hear your experience and something I should do to at least be prepared
