Thinking about buying a project boat for some lake fun/weekending. I’ll be able to get it for a couple thousand from a friend. Needs some cosmetic love but floats and runs.
Anyone know any info about it? My friend doesn’t know some exact specifics as there’s not much online about it. Does have a V8 inboard. 1984. 22’.
Just curious about hearing experiences with this type is boat.

I knew a guy who had about a 26 or 28 footer with twin V-8 inboards. Don’t think he ever made it home from a trip without running out of fuel. He could never carry enough gasoline to make it home.

A big whole in the water to pour money into.

If Cosmetics is your only problem, you’re getting off easy. Be prepared for sanding, varnishing and repeat. It’s kinda hard to evaluate with no pictures. Hopefully you don’t have to replace any boards for it will be hard to match color and stain.
My grandfather had one when I was a kid and I remember vividly it always had a leak at the propeller shaft strut.
This boat will always be a project, fun if you have time and money to throw at them.
ETA: my comparison was a 1957 Sportsman ‘17

Scorpion maybe?
I think CC used Chevy motors, probably wood stringer construction. If foamed under the floor, stringers are likely rotted out. Stringer replacement on a boat that size is a 200 hr job or more to DIY.

Take it to Tri-Parishes Fiberglass in Folsom. They'll fix you up!

I have some time to put into it and I’d be kinda splitting the project work and costs with a friend so it wouldn’t be fully on my shoulders.
I’ll try to post some pics of it or at least something like it in a little bit.

quote:My buddy and I tried that on a big ol wooden boat about 15 years ago. We repaired about 1/100th of it and quit.

The boat I’m looking at getting is extremely similar to this one minus about 3 feet difference.
Seats need to be redone. Definitely some cabin cleaning. Taking it on a test ride soon to determine the specifics of some other issues. But like i said, it floats and runs. It’s something my friend is currently able to take his family out on the water with.

I'm just not a fan of that type of boat. Not a lot of versatility. Fun for cruising and drinking, maybe swimming while at anchor....... Thats about it.

How fast can you run? Run that fast away.

Well that’s about all we’d use it for our here. For the price, we aren’t expecting to buy an nice ski boat.

I owned a 08 310 Chaparral, it had ac/heat, stove, 2 small refrigerators, bathroom and generator, on Red River for several years. Watched many a LSU football game on it, fun times indeed. Sounds like you're getting a solid boat, just be prepared to fix things as they break. If you don't mind spending the money, get a survey on it, they will tell you straight up what needs attention. The most important thing is to use it, they don't like sitting up. Good luck and safe boating

I’m looking forward to it. We are all helicopter crew chiefs so we don’t mind doing necessary work. And we usually have time to do so. And we have all the barracks that’ll wanna help.
Plus It’s only $1500. So not a huge deal

Update: bought it.
Took it out twice today. Ran fine until we busted a belt. But no biggie. Fun enough boat. Loaded 7 on it.

The boat in that picture is not a straight inboard, but an I/O. For quite some time OMC owned Chris Craft. The OMC outdrive (or I/O) was a known bad actor. I had one myself and it cost a pile of money.
I don't know when OMC bought Chris Craft, but either way be sure you know what brand of I/O drive you are getting and if it's OMC, put some coin aside for repairs and know the specific modes of failure. Most are easy to find on the internet.
This is a good starting point: LINK
