Some people are more comfortable with "non-lethal" stuff and that is their decision. However, if I am ever threatened I want to stop the threat, and IMO best way to do that is with a firearm.
This thing is nothing more than a fancy pepper spray. You can find cases where people get pepper sprayed and it barely phases them.
