First off, not the ideal time of year to charter a trip.
I'm inclined to believe that you overpaid because the guy in your group handling the monies allowed you to overpay by accident or to cover the bachelor's expenses.
It's usual and customary for the trips I've taken that tips are left up to each member of the group. And as far as other expenses go, there's food and drink factored into the equation.
Bait isn't always calculated into the fixed expense, and I've seen where gas is calculated after the trip too, especially on offshore trips. There are many variables.

Not to hi-jack but have a question. Been on many charters that had just a set price and deckhand tip. This summer going on a extended day trip, $1500 plus fuel (my guess is 750 for fuel). My guess for total trip is 2200/2300 total. Question is tip based on trip plus fuel or some other calculation. My thought is 450/500 tip would be good.

When in doubt, tip 1.5x what your buddies do.
I would think $500 tip for a $2300 trip would be acceptable and generous, unless the guy puts you on the motherload of 200lb YFT. Then tip however much you can afford. In general, the guys working overnight trips work really hard to put you on fish.

We do a charter out of Destin with a guy that I have been going with for years. A 10 hour is in that ballpark and that includes fuel. We usually tip about $100 a person so that comes up to close to $500 in tippage. If you really hammer them, you can always tip more.

Sorry for the delay, this is a quick rundown. My problem with the trip was there was no effort on the captains part. We paid for a boat ride, that’s about it. We didn’t drink so its not like he had to worry about that. I was told the price before hand and I was fine with it, but then I looked the guys website up when we got back and he charged us more then what he advertised. We had fun and that’s all that matters. We did tip. My biggest thing was the effort or lack thereof on the guides part.

Gonna have to expand on the 'no effort' part. Does that mean he just didn't seem interested, or was there something in particular he did that didn't seem right?

Ok.....we really need some more explanation before even getting close to dissecting this. What kind of trip was this? Inshore/Offshore?
If there is a price discrepancy I would go back to the guy and inquire why you were charged more than what was stated on the website. What was said when the trip was booked?

Yeah, I'd be willing to bet that the Captain posted those rates back in the days of cheaper fuel and just hadnt updated. Most of the good guides I know aren't terribly web savvy. Not sure I'd want to fish with one who was!
What did you catch? What did you come back to the dock with? Come, man, tell us what you saw!

He didn’t seemed interested, didn’t really seem like he had a plan, like I said we took a boat ride. Was inshore, we brought in 6 reds 1 spec between the 4 of us.
Also we didnt mind the lack of fish. Thats life it happens.

So he just drove you to a spot, dropped anchor, and sat back and closed his eyes?

I can name 4 people I know who could go with the best guide and not do this well on a day with poor fishing weather.

Pretty much, gave us a popping cork and lure and said have at it .... Again the lack of fish wasnt the problem like i said, thats nature.

I had the same experience out of Dularge with a certain famous guides brother.

You are gonna have to elaborate a little more on his lack of interest if you want some sympathy here. Did he initially say he was going to put the fish ON the hook for you? Did he not move around and try to find some fish? Was he just an a-hole? Did y'all ask to move?

Did yall just sit in the same spot the whole time, or jump to a few different places when you werent getting hits?
Most guides I have been with are on the phone quite a bit, getting and receiving information from others about the bite in the area.
What was he actually doing while you were fishing? Any interaction, bullshitting, or just sitting with his arms crossed watching the clock?

How many hours were you out & approximately how many different spots did the guide try to fish?

We moved around alot, we spent more time riding in the boat then we had our lines in the water. Im not looking for sympathy either. There was just what seemed like a lack of effort or interest on his part. Im not saying you have to act like we are best friends with us but atleast make it enjoyable. He could of been having a bad day, who knows lol ..

Moving around from place to place when you aren't getting bites is the guide doing his job. Conversating could have made it better, but fishing bad weather and bad conditions is not a fun time IMO.
A bad guide would be one who bitches at you for using the equipment you like, in spite of catching a fish every cast. Also, one who can't get off his arse and has to be lifted into the boat.

Need full details.
I fish here/there/yon 5-6 times a year, and only one time have I had a truly bad trip. I told the folks too. It was with a crew I'd fished w/10+ times over the years. I told them the guy they had us w/did NOT know what he was doing, that I never hit a reef shell all day long, fished on muddy bottoms all day, and the whole deal sucked. We caught one trout. Everyone else at Spicer's had boxes of fish. Ray Christy (Fishy Business) had about 75 trout AND 15 reds.
They told me "the next one's on them". This was with Cedar Edge Lodge (the Constance Brothers). They used to/probably still do fish out of Spicer's. Great dudes. The only reason I never took them up on it / fish with them anymore is because I moved to Texas shortly thereafter, started doing a little better off financially, and when I did get back to La, started fishing w/the Poe's / Eric Rue if I go to Big Lake. Now that I'm in Monroe, I go more to SELA than to Big Lake. Point is, they stood up. So, all that said, a bad trip from a reputable service is generally discounted/next one's discounted/that kind of thing.
Went w/Dane Bennett (takes overflow from some of the bigger names out of Wyclosky (sp)) several times last year. First trip we had was poor, and he KNEW it was going to be. Couldn't get to Breton Sound because of the wind. He offered to discount it/we felt like he did his job, paid him full price + a nice tip, went back a month or so later, and he insisted on discounting us 200.
So, I feel like I've got good experience in judging whether y'all got ripped off. Full details please.
