Do you just cut hunks off of it and bait or do you melt it down and mold it? I remember somebody telling me they melted it down and mixed dog food in to it.

Never used Zote. Always plain white Ivory. Just cut it into cubes. Nothing else needed.

I've melted down Ivory and mixed with minced garlic and cherry kool-aid then put in ice trays to cool and then put on a hook.

It works well. I've used every bait known to man, including my hand.

All caught on ivory soap. And the best thing about soap is nothing but catfish will eat it. On cut bait you will catch eels, turtles, and gue.

When soap isn’t working or the water starts to clear up we switch to shiner/cut bait. We set out glass jugs and catch them by the hundreds.

I haven’t catfished with a trot line in over 30 years and when I did, I used a lot of what has already been mentioned on here.
But I will tell you that the best trot line fishermen I ever knew or heard of were 2 brothers from northwest Louisiana and one time I ask them was there a secret bait they used and they said Slick Jim’s. I had never heard of them but it was a small bream from 4-7 inches long, one called it a creek perch. They would literally fill up an 18 ft long 6 foot wide boat with catfish when they went out. My guess is that a Slick Jim might be a green sunfish.

And don’t be afraid to to put some lines of in some shallow water. Flatheads will be cruising shallow water for spawning sunfish.

Thanks. I put 20 limb lines out today. 5 have zote, 5 have ivory, 5 have pig liver, and 5 are random parts of a Squirrel I had in the freezer. I'm betting on the liver but I'll be pumped if the soap works because it's easy to deal with.

Just a note. The soap works best in murky water and you are gonna want a little current.

When we go to Verret and fish jugs in the lake we don’t even bother with soap. But when the conditions are right it’s our favorite bait for obvious reasons.

Had a 3 to 5 lb blue on the soap. 8 to 10 lb blue on the pig liver. A couple others had twisted themselves off. Was a pretty morning to be on the river.

How do you do this? Bait in jar, hole in lid?

These are not the exact ones we use but they are close enough. There are some videos and stuff out there on how to make them. You want one which is has a custom flute at the end. Holes in the lid. There has to be a bit of current. Bait them with corn meal. Set them up just off the shore in shallow water. Make sure the fluted end is facing downstream since minnows swim upstream.

The guy in this video does a good job explaining and showing how they work.

I would add that we additionally place stakes down to mark the jugs and keep them in place if the current is strong.

Interesting, will give that a try. I have a turtle battle going on, I assume they won't eat soap?

Also, I wish OP would change up the topic title a little so I don't get Brad Paisley stuck in my head every time I click on this forum.
