Was fishing one time in GI and caught a small gaft top on an artificial. It’s barb went into my shoe and got me in the heel. Didn’t hurt at first then noticed my foot getting warm. Took the shoe off and had a lot of blood in the shoe. Damn toxins caused my blood to thin and was pouring out. Once it stopped bleeding it just hurt. One part bleach and 9 parts water is a great antiseptic.

Caught a small one once and while trying to get the satan spawn off, it spun around and stuck me thru my index fingernail. MF it hurt and didn't have near enough beer for sedation.

Fisherman on Red river crossed the levee to Rapides regional ER.
Holding fish with the spine through his palm.
According to legend.

I felt pain reading this. Stepped on a dead head head on time someone left on the bank. That was fun.
Coming up we always heard if you licked the head of a gafftop you’d trip bails. Any truth to this?

If it makes you feel better, I had a wading partner get stuck. While walking to the boat he was hit by a stingray.

Knew a couple of dudes get infection/blood poisoning from catfish. One was being dumb enough to play a game where they threw it at each other.
The other just was finned trying to remove a hook. Had to have surgery. It looked terrible.

It’s not funny, but I laughed.
That is some shitty luck right there.

it's almost always the small ones that get you since the large cats barbs tend to round off as they age.
Yep. Worst one I ever got was just like OP describes between thumb and index finger. Bastard wasn't 10 inches long and I would have thrown him back until he shanked me. He was good for a few bites per side when I filleted his arse.
I thought I was going to pass out a few times that night, and my fishing buddy made it a running joke getting injected with "bad catfish drugs".

I was a kid running around the beaches of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the Waveland area back in the early 60's and stepped on a dead catfish partially buried in the sand.
Bastard got me right in the middle of the sole of my foot and one of my cousins had to pull it out. Hurt like hell and wound up getting a tetanus shot and a couple others for antibiotics just to be on the safe side since the catfish was dead for days.
Took the fun out of running in the sand for years as I was always pre-occupied with looking for dead catfish.

Regular channel or blue cat? Or a hard head? Hardheads are sons of bitches. Regular catfish clean it, then run your hands on the fish to get some slime and rub slime on it. It relieves some pain and helps it heal. The purpose of the slime is to help prevent bacterial infections on the fish itself
Hardheads are infinitely worse. Would use meat tenderizer on the wound when we were younger.
Knock on wood, I haven’t had a bad hardhead stick in nearly 20 years. Probably because I beat the bastards pretty good before handling them. Especially the ones that are 3-4” long. If any of you have done a lot of saltwater fishing, especially with live shrimp, sometimes you’ll get one that’s about the size of a live shrimp that somehow gets on the hook
