Anyone hunt the Cat Island NWR recently? Is it worth the trip for deer or ducks? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated

I know it is bow hunting only for deer.

Cat Island is a great place to hunt but you have to spend a little time scouting and understanding the rules. We have family land next to Cat Island and is great duck and deer hunting. Unlike a lot of other wildlife management areas there aren’t a lot of hunters everywhere you go. It is worth the effort

It's pretty pressured now. Went Squirrel hunting last year and the parking lots were slap full of bow hunters.

I drove by a couple Saturdays ago. Lots of trucks at every parking area.

I'd lean more towards the rise in cost and diminishing private/lease availability has driven more people to public.

I’ve only hunted bikinis in Smuggler’s Cove…and it’s way too cold for that right now.

Word for the wise... in general, public forums are not the place to discuss specific public lands if you don't want a influx of new folks

Not really, it's close to Baton Rouge. It stayed flooded so long that a lot of the oaks have died. The ones that are left are in poor health and don't really drop. The water has also killed a bunch of the understory so a lot of areas are pretty open. Hopefully once the dead oaks fall it'll get thick thick again.

I live 5 minutes away from it and I rarely deer hunt it. I'd rather go a bit further north.

Not asking for “specific” spots in the public hunting reserve. Just asking if it is even accessible, safe to maneuver, and for any other pointers anyone has. Thought that was the point and culture of the OB? My bad.
