I decided to give Lowe's (that was my first mistake lol) a chance again this week, I needed 18 treated deck boards (8' length). I had to go through about 75 boards to get 18 decent ones. The face the Lowe's workers were making while passing by and seeing the stack of crooked ones was great lol! Most of the boards were still wet and heavy and hadn't dried out. Anyways, when I got home...I started laying them on my deck frame which is exactly 8'x 8' making sure the first board was exactly square to the frame. Prior to laying the boards (after leveling the frame) I double checked length from corner to corner (to make sure my frame was squared up perfect) and they were both exactly the same, so everything seemed great. Well after laying a couple boards down, I noticed on the back side that the boards were all slightly different lengths. Varying anywheres from about 3/8" in length. Like wtf...they can't simply cut these boards to exactly the same length? Are they just being lazy? Some were 96", some were 96 1/4", some 96 3/8", etc. It's on the back side, so I can live with it. I planned on just coming back with my circular saw at the end and cutting them straight across. But it's just crazy how bad boards are nowadays....and then when you have to look through the whole stack, they look at you like you're crazy.

Monday morning rant over...

Lowes and Home Depot suck for lumber but sometimes it's tempting to try them since they're cheaper than other lumber stores.

The only other place near me (Lafayette) is Stine's. Should have gone to them instead. But honestly, they're lumber isn't that much better. And last time I went, Stine's didn't want me picking out my own boards or digging through the stack. They wanted me to basically take which boards they gave me. I told them that I wanted to pick out my own and they reluctantly let me in the end.

Stine's in LC have always been great for not giving me shite lumber.

The few times I had them deliver if we had some boards that we're jacked I'd leave em out and they'd credit them for me.

Very much seems like it nowadays.

I can live with the deck boards having a slight curve (front to back) because when laying them flat they will be screwed down anyways, so that doesn't matter too much in this project. But I refuse to buy deck boards that are cut crooked on the sides for this...it will mess up and throw off your square when laying them down.

I had to return a whole order of 2x4s once. They tried to sell me 1.5x3.5 for the same price.

Why...because I wanted and expected to buy some straight boards. I stacked the crooked ones up neatly (out of the way) and even asked them if they wanted me to help put them back. What else should I have done? Just buy a bunch of crooked boards to work with?

Do you work at Lowe's?

I worked at a lumber yard during summers while I was in undergrad. Can confirm this statement.

As soon as a bundle of material is unbanded, the material which is near the top starts to bow. When idiots free up others and move them from the tightly-packed stacks in the unit by breaking the strips holding rows together, they are just creating more fricked up boards.

I hated dealing with the folks looking for two 2x4s and sifting through 50 or 60 to find two that were marginally 'straighter' to their eye than the others.

Well, that's the type of work you can expect while being an undergraduate. Y'all sound like some cry baby millenials, just because y'all had to restack some pieces of wood (2x4s at that). Guess what...that's part of the job, get over it. If you don't like it, find somewheres else to work. You can't blame a customer wanting/needing to buy straight boards, it's what most people would expect when buying boards.

I survived. Did it three summers and it taught me a lot. Worked my tail off driving trucks and delivering material.

I just hated wasting time sifting through boards for old fogies like you buying boards meant for framing material for their projects at home when they should be buying better quality wood.
