Camping - Boy Scouts

My son is in Boy Scouts and they have there first camp out with moms on 10/7 - I camped as a kid but it has been a while. I would like to get a 3-4 person tent, don't want to break the bank and reviews are all over the place - thinking around $200 or so. Just want something that will last and is comfortable for 2 people. Doesn't have to be light for backpacking just fairly easy to set up and protection from rain. Suggestions??TIA

I'm pretty sure most boy scout camping is back your car up and set up camp. At least in the younger years of scouting. So with that you don't need it to be light at all or even super high quality. For this type of camping Coleman stuff will suit you fine. I'm a fan of their "instant" tents and canopys. While on the heavy side they go up in an instant and pack up almost as fast.
And you're right about getting twice the person tent as you need. If you want to sleep without being crowded then this is a must.
Amazon coleman tent $124

Eureka Timberline 4, $200ish. Sleeps two comfortably.

What's your email? Location? I have a tent and other camping stuff I bought when my son was in scouts I'd be willing to sell pretty cheap as we used it once.

I was a Cubmaster and a Scoutmaster for my four boys. I never needed or wanted anything bigger than a 7x7 3 man.
However, it does matter how old your son is. If he is in Cubs, he will be tenting with you. My wife never went camping with us, so I didn't need to fit more than me and two kids into it at a time. Once they are in Boy Scouts, they are supposed to be in a tent with another boy from the Troop (unless it's a hammock-based troop, but that is a different subject. I always had the boys share a tent until they were First Class.) So, on joint Troop-Pack camp-outs, I was with the two youngest while the two oldest were in a tent of their own. Two Coleman 7x7s took care of us.
Enjoy.

dont buy anything coleman, etc.
Eureka or Kelty will be your best value, as they are good tents that are easy to setup and mostly weatherproof. REI is also a good value.
The biggest thing on those trips is that you're comfortable and there is nothing more uncomfortable than a leaking tent and soaked sleeping bag. Coleman and the like arent weatherproof.

No tent is weatherproof without some additional work. Best thing you can do once you buy the tent is set it up in your backyard and put a good seam sealer on all the seams. Couple coats and leave it out for a day or two before you pack it back up. A little bit of prep before you take it out goes a long way.
Also make sure to get a good ground tarp to place under the tent

Don't forget to spray the tent with permethrin, it makes a huge difference.
Oh and my Coleman 10 man does not leak, been a great tent for 5 seasons.

Eagle Scout here, this a great recommendation. Eureka is who made the tent I used all throughout scouting. This tent is good blend of size and weight. If he stays with scouting, it's light enough to work as a back packing tent too.

Eagle scout as well. Used the same green Eureka Timberline for almost 15yrs of camping 5-6 times per year. Gave it away to a new cub scout. Seal the seams, take care of it, it will last.

For $200, I like the REI Co-op Camp Dome 4.
- Dome tents don't have big flat surfaces, so they handle the wind better.
- This tent has two doors, so you're not climbing over your tent mates to get out.
- It has a lot of mesh for good ventilation which helps with condensation. But the mesh doesn't come all the way to the ground, so you still have some privacy if you go without the rain fly.

Not true.
I haven't done a thing so far to my 3 Mountain Hardwear tents and I'm dry. Always.
Only thing I ever deal with is a bit of condensation but it's always on the vestibules. Not the interior to drip on me.

My Academy Sports brand 4-person tent (cheap!) has done well for my two boys and I. Nothing fancy for camping out of a car. Use it a few times per year.
