On clearance at Academy

I had an older leupold deer rifle scope on an AR a couple of years ago, but moved it back to a bolt action rifle for actual deer hunting. I always liked the setup of a 3x9 40 mm scope on an AR though. I got some Academy gift cards for Christmas so I figured I would see what they had. Low and behold this Bushnell AR scope is on clearance for $102.98. Regularly $139.99.

I threw it on some weaver extra high double strap scope rings and I must say I'm impressed for a "cheap" scope. The glass is very clear, and it's designed specifically for a 55-62 gr. 5.56/.223 bullet. Sight it in dead on a 100 yards and it has a drop point reticle that goes out to 600 yards.

I'm excited to sight it in and give more feedback in the near future, but initial impressions seem good. It has decent reviews on youtube and 4.7 stars out of 5 on Academy's website. So if you are looking for a scope you may want to see if one is in stock at your local store. You can also order from the website if it's not in stock. I bought one of the last 2 at the Shreveport Academy.

This is the reticle. You can read the details that talks about 600 yards.

How it looks on a weapon. I mounted mine slightly farther forward for better eye relief and better access to the charging handle.

Ohhhh!!! $4 burn.

Except I picked mine up the same day, got to physically inspect it and it's already mounted. That one has to be shipped. I got an extra $4 on that.

I can spend that on a scope I'll put on a deer rifle, because I know I'll take care of it. I'll bounce an AR around in a side by side as a pig gun, so a higher quality glass just doesn't seem like a good option for me.

They are ok. The glass is very...Chinese. The PST and PST genII are better even though the erector allows for less zoom range.

over doubling the price point from $300 on those huh? i rather go bushnell scope than spend that cheese. I'm going to have to buy another rifle scope set up for my son this year too, rather not go cheap on that scope.

I see factory refurb 1-4 pst scopes for like $289 fairly often. The new ones aren't expensive either. I can shoot you a message if you want next time I see them.

Nice. I killed my first deer with a Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle .223, but I rarely admit it around here.

I see you mounted your scope more forward similar to what I did.

How do you like the scope?

Yeah, I know it's not popular round here to hunt deer with a .223, but I specifically hunted small plots and am shooting a 70gr Barnes TSX. Did the job well. My brother picked the scope up for me when he came across it at a WalMart in N Louisiana for $80. Couldn't pass it up. Does better in low-light than I thought it would've! For the price-point it is very good.

I haven't gotten to use the BDC reticle yet, but hope to air out some longer shots now that deer season is over and I can shoot down the pipeline we have at the camp.

I have the 4.5-18x on my 6.5 Grendel. Shot a buck with it at 235 yards this year. Works great for what I use it for.

I like to mount mine flush with the rear of the receiver to where the charging handle is almost fully in the open. Here's my 20" DPMS wearing a Redfield 4-12x by 40mm (easily sub MOA with this setup). This was a pre-Bapple-video prepping area:

For me it comes down to the value level of the rifle. For example, I wouldn't put a Swarovski on an M&P15 Sport even though it's an accurate rifle. It would be a smarter move to put a high-value, affordable scope on it like a Redfield, Vortex, or Nikon. The other side of the coin is something like the Aero Precision AR10 I'm compiling this spring. It will likely wear a Leupold or Trijicon scope since it's a higher value rifle.

As far as getting an AR-specific scope, unless you are looking for significant eye relief or a gun with bullet-drop-compensation (BDC) that is set up for 223 (like the one in the OP) it doesn't really matter. And if you're going to be shooting only specific loads through the gun or working up your own hand load, it matters even less. For a good all-around scope, just go with a quality manufacturer and roll with it.

for whatever its worth, the ar i'm putting a scope on is a complete wilson combat upper. i bought a stripped essential arms (la) lower and built the remainder from there.

I have the 1-4*24. It has been a great scope. If I had one complaint is the .1 mil adjustment. I like .1 mil adjustment of the scope had mil dot subtentions. Since it doesn't I would have preferred 1/4 MOA.

A Wilson upper definitely warrants a $quality$ optic.
