We like to take our dog to the retriever park at Burbank to let her swim/bumper train. There were 30-40 snakes prowling the lake yesterday.

I called BREC to complain - where else in BR can I take my lab to swim in the meantime??

It's just that time of year. Critters are out. Those snakes aren't out on the prowl for your dog, so I wouldn't sweat it. They'll do everything they can to get away from a dog running and jumping in/out of the lake.

Dogs take water moccasin bites much better than people do. Its usually NBD if a dog gets bit by one.

I haven't seen near as many snakes by the pond that is next to the dog park.

Good info - still makes me really nervous though.

Any other options to take her swimming? Don't have any land of my own...

And I doubt that they are even poisonous snakes.

If you're still concerned, I would just try any other BREC park with a lake. In my experience, people have loose dogs at all the parks. I'm sure you could let your dog swim in them. I would at least try that until someone told me different.

Also, those snakes have probably been there every time you've taken your dog to that lake. They will probably be there whenever you take it in the future. I think you'd be fine going back anytime.

What about LSU lakes? not sure how strict they are on dogs off leash out there.

Or the pond by the cottages.

There is a pond in one of the sections of Green Trails neighborhood by shenandoah, that is off the road a good bit, with a big field by it i use to go to a good bit.

Are you training her, or is she just a pet? just curious.

Not that strict from what I've seen, assuming your dog is decently trained.

Pretty much the case in most areas. Don't be that guy that has not control over his crazy dog.

Used to go there all the time when I was training my BLM and working in Geismar a lot .

Unless it's a puppy

That being said, I saw a snake at the LSU Lakes, and he took one look at my 10 week and he took off underwater.

My dog swam in the lakes twice and got a bad skin rash both times.
The Burbank park is a soccer complex, not a retriever training area.
Look at joining Amite HRC or some of the other groups in the area, great way to open doors in the dog training world.

Go to the cottages of baton Rouge off of Ben hur. Relatively clean water and lots of dogs swim and live there.

Do not put a dog in the water near the fraternity and sorority houses. There is something sharp on the bottom around there and it will destroy their feet. Speaking from experience. And I lived in one of those houses.

So the fenced in area that has a sign saying retrieving training area, is in fact, not a retrieving training area?
