Don't rely on a shotgun for home defense. A pistol or AR is a much better option.

A couple of years ago, I had this conversation with a buddy of mine that retired as an Army officer with 20+ years of experience. Airborne, Ranger, Green Berets he did alot with multiple tours to the "sandbox". He has forgotten more about CQB that most of us will ever know. Long story short, his advice for the average homeowner was get a shotgun and pistol for home defense. He told me that he's likely put hundreds of thousands of rounds thru an AR (m4) platform and while it's a great system, he was worried about over penetration of the .223/5.56 rounds in a modern household. "Start with the shotgun, transition to the pistol."

With all that being said, use the tools you have at hand and are most comfortable with.

Joe Biden says all you need is a shotgun...a double barreled shotgun.

I used to be too, then I saw actual tests. Anything CAN go where you don't want it, but the 5.56 isn't that scary around drywall and studs, especially with OTMs.

To be fair (to him), most of his experience with the platform was with FMJ's.

A pistol is poo garbage compared to a shotgun

I can aim my P226 much quicker, and get 2-3 followup shots on target before you consider a followup with a shotgun.

People think shotguns project a cone of death; they don't. You still have to hit something to make it matter.

How much faster is a pistol than a semi-auto shotgun? How much faster does it go bang than the shotgun? Serious question. And how fast can you draw your pistol and put 5 shots on target? Most people think they are a lot faster than they really are. Not saying you aren’t sub 3.5 seconds. But most people, if you time them, they are either very fast and completely miss the target; or accurate but veeeeerrrryyyy slow.

I think for an inexperienced shooter, or even an experienced shooter in a stressful life or death situation, a 20 gauge with an improved cylinder choke loaded with #6 or 7.5 low brass is the best home defense load in a multi person building. It will turn someone around. Or if shooting through walls is not an issue reduced recoil buckshot.

I'm no Jerry Miculek, but I can string a few shots together pretty quick with pistols I'm comfortable with. My Sig, Daewoo, CZ, some of the others I own. I have some time on those, and particularly with my Sig (an older WG with Uncle Mike grips on it), I'm very comfortable in my muscle memory with it (it points where I intend, and I know the reset extemely well). Haven't timed it recently, but I know the feel of the gun enough, that I don't worry too much on finding the sight picture. I normally practice by using an empty ammo box (about the size of a cellphone) as the target; aim-small miss-small, you might say. Goal is to empty the magazine at 15 yds with all on the box. Do it enough, and you will get used to doing it as soon as you feel the reset. The muzzle flip has passed by then.

Shotguns and long guns are fun, but they're a bit cumbersome to quickly shift to a different target, or one you don't anticipate. Those fractions of a second involved, I just feel more comfortable with my handgun. YMMV.

Biggest thing, IMO, is to find the platform you're most comfortable with, and get used to it until it's muscle memory.
