My dad's a diabetic so he brings bananas every time he comes on the boat with me and we have no problems. Now, fish counters are a whole nother thing. Bring one of them sonofabitches out and the bite is guaranteed to shut down.

That's because there's nothing to it and to perpetuate this silly nonsense is butt-dumb.

Um - that quote ends "then you suffer", one of my favorite lines in a song.

The whole Jack Aubry/Stephen Maturin (Master and Commander) series is full of sailor superstitions. Patrick O'Brian usually makes sure they come true in the books. One of them is a Friday departure. Navy fleets NEVER left on a Friday. Having a priest on board is terrible luck too.

Bananas are banned on any saltwater boat I have been on. On workboats I remember a young girl brought some on for a research cruise and a deckhand grabbed them and thru them into the harbour ;) She looked at me for support – nope, deckie is right its bad luck (hell its bad luck to have a woman on board according to some cap’ns) no bananas.

I figured it was an old wives tale but on a dive trip back in the day a padnah brought bananas onboard that we did not know about and he fell off of the boat while tying up to the rig. He had tied up to a rig hundreds of times before w/o falling overboard – we figured it was the bananas – end of story

The only problem I could see it actually causing is the smell of the banana on your hands and then touching your bait with it, and that making them not bite.

I never eat while fishing. I never take a break from fishing to eat.
